    Job Overview

     

    Manages all pharmacy and medication use functions. Supervises daily operations of the inpatient pharmacy department including, but not limited to, decentralized pharmacy services, human resource management (hiring, training, coaching/supervising, performance management, scheduling, etc.), application of technology, resource utilization, customer service, and patient medication safety.

    Responsibilities

    + Management of pharmacy services

    + Continuously improves work processes to serve customers and meet business goals. Ensures high quality pharmacy and medication management services.

    + Manages all direct patient care services (inpatient pharmacy, emergency services, clinical programs, medication monitoring etc.), medication use guidelines, best-of-practice order sets, and other areas as assigned.

    + Demonstrates in depth knowledge of current patient care, pharmacy practice, pharmacotherapy, technology, and communication skills.

    + Manages all appropriate pharmacy processes and systems to ensure excellent patient care and timely and accurate delivery of medication services.

    + Develops and maintains programs designed to improve the skills of pharmacists and pharmacist extenders performing patient care; participates in the education of physicians, nurses, and other health care providers.

    + Seeks customer feedback and analyzes the work to identify opportunities for improvement.

    + Uses process improvement methods to make improvements.

    + Uses systems thinking to understand the unintended consequences of actions.

    + Uses best practices information to set stretch goals and appropriate priorities.

    + Management of the application of new technologies.

    + Participates in development and advancement of new clinical services.

    + Ensures that all relevant policies and procedures are followed.

    + Ensures safe and effective implementation and application of new technologies including, but not limited to:

    + Computer systems such as the electronic health record (EHR), pharmacy dosing programs, pharmacy automation systems, etc.

    + Establishing appropriate rules and alerts, order sets etc.

    + Management of finances

    + Understands and accepts the challenge of fiscal management. Fully comprehends the financial challenges in healthcare and is an effective steward of limited resources.

    + Creatively manages resources.

    + Demonstrates clear understanding of financial picture of healthcare.

    + Helps others understand and respond to the financial challenges.

    + Demonstrates ongoing fiscal responsiveness within and outside area of responsibility.

    + Involves staff and stakeholders in financial management strategies.

    + Manages staffing levels and drug expenditures to meet departmental budget parameters.

    + Develops revenue and cost savings opportunities to manage the pharmacy within budget parameters.

    + Monitors financial performance on a routine basis and takes needed actions to optimize departmental financial performance.

    + Patient medication safety

    + Ensures that medication appropriate safety programs are in place to ensure the safest possible drug therapies.

    + Identifies and corrects patient safety issues.

    + Takes measures to reduce and eliminate medication errors.

    + Conducts needed root cause analyses for medication occurrences.

    + Regulatory compliance

    + Assures that the pharmacy department and the medication use process meet all regulatory requirements such as State Board of Pharmacy, Department of Health, Joint Commission, etc.

    + Coaching and advancing the role of staff members.

    + Serves as a resource to pharmacy staff members and encourages their development through coaching and mentoring.

    + Practices active listening, invites input from others

    + Openly expresses thoughts and opinions and concerns.

    + Resolves issues in a manner that maintains self-esteem of all persons involved.

    + Deals with conflict constructively.

    + Coordinates recruitment, retention, orientation, and advanced training.

    + Assures that staff members receive relevant, timely and appropriate information.

    + Takes advantage of teachable moments.

    + Guides, motivates, and holds people accountable for their practice.

    + Provides candid and timely feedback and coaching on an ongoing basis.

    + Conducts performance reviews in a timely and effective manner.

    + Continuously takes action to enhance employee satisfaction.

    Required Qualifications

    + Bachelor’s in pharmacy with 3-5 years progressive leadership experience

    + One to three years hospital pharmacy (or equivalent) experience

    + Licensed or eligible for licensure as a pharmacist in Minnesota

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 residency program

    + Doctor of Pharmacy degree

    + Master's Degree in Pharmacy Administration and Leadership or equivalent (MBA, MHA, MPH, etc.)

    + Previous management experience

    + Board Certified in Pharmacotherapy

    Compensation Disclaimer

     

    The posted pay range is for a 40-hour workweek (1.0 FTE). The actual rate of pay offered within this range may depend on several factors, such as FTE, skills, knowledge, relevant education, experience, and market conditions. Additionally, our organization values pay equity and considers the internal equity of our team when making any offer. Hiring at the maximum of the range is not typical. If your role is eligible for a sign-on bonus, the bonus program that is approved and in place at the time of offer, is what will be honored.
