Clinical Lab Analyst
Job Description
The Clinical Lab Analyst will perform newborn screening testing on blood spot specimens to identify infants at risk for inherited conditions. The role utilizes various methods, including immunoassay, enzyme assay, electrophoresis, HPLC, tandem mass spectrometry, and molecular techniques.
Responsibilities
+ Conduct daily operations, routine maintenance, calibration, and assist in troubleshooting of laboratory instruments and equipment.
+ Document and review newborn screening test data, procedures, and results.
+ Release data and reports for use by physicians, healthcare professionals, and newborn screening medical follow-up teams.
+ Develop and maintain standard operating procedures and prepare documentation for test verification or validation studies.
+ Perform quality control and quality assurance procedures in accordance with established standard operating procedures and policies.
+ Recognize basic problems and assist in troubleshooting laboratory method and performance issues.
+ Assemble quality control data for further analysis, recognize problems, document issues, perform root cause analysis, and initiate corrective actions.
Essential Skills
+ Proficiency in Chemistry, Biology, Genetics, and Biochemistry.
+ Experience with HPLC and mass spectrometry.
+ Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biology, Genetics, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
+ Meet Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) qualifications for high complexity testing (6 semesters of Biology and 6 semesters of Chemistry).
+ At least 3 months of hands-on laboratory experience.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ Certified Medical Lab Technologist or MLT is a plus.
+ If holding an AA degree, must meet CLIA requirements.
+ Six months to one year of related newborn screening laboratory experience is desirable.
+ Basic experience with immunoassay, mass spectrometry, and molecular biology techniques.
+ Completion of human genetics college course work.
+ Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) experience.
Work Environment
The work environment is a 24/7 laboratory focused on analyzing newborn blood samples for potential inherited disorders. The lab is the only department operating around the clock, highlighting the urgency of these tests. Located in Ankeny, the lab handles samples from Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Alaska. Candidates will work an overnight shift from 9:30 PM to 7:30 AM on a rotating 5 on, 4 off schedule, including weekends and holidays. The lab accommodates specific weekend off requests, and the shift rotation allows for significant downtime and personal time. Initial training occurs during the day for the first week or two. The team consists of approximately 7 people, rotating through three separate testing areas. Candidates must adhere to a dress code of long pants and closed-toed shoes.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
