    Description of Work Unit

    The Animal Reproduction and Biotechnology Laboratory ( ARBL ) is an interdepartmental program focusing on research, teaching and service in the area of reproductive biology of domestic animals. Faculty of the ARBL include members of three departments in two colleges. The ARBL has been recognized as a Colorado State University Program of Research and Scholarly Excellence since 1989. This position is based at ARBL but will be working all over Foothills Campus.

    Position Summary

    The Animal Technician will oversee the care for animals housed at the ARBL . The primary duties of this position are to: 1) ensure that all animals are fed, watered and cared for as directed by the ARBL Farm Manager, ARBL business manager, and ARBL Director and the faculty; 2) engage in cleaning and maintenance of facilities as needed for proper care of animals; 3) provide mentorship and set an example for the hourly staff to insure all animal-care protocols are followed to keep all animals safe and healthy; 4) report to the ARBL Farm Manager any deficits or concerns with equipment or supplies; and 5) be able to use farm equipment such as a skid steer and dump trailer. Specifically, this position needs to make sure the animals are safe and healthy, which requires observation of animals, facilities and equipment during daily activities. During an emergency this position works in coordination with the Foothills animal managers for evacuation of and relocation of animals depending on the situation. This position requires practical animal care experience

    Position Minimum Qualifications

    + High school diploma or GED .

    + One year of experience in farm animal care.

    + Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.

    + Flexibility to work extended hours, including early mornings, weekends and holidays, as necessary.

    + Basic computer skills.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Three years of experience in farm animal care.

    + Ability to make basic facility repairs as necessary.

    + One year experience with heavy equipment operation.

    Duty/Responsibility

    Provide the feeding, watering, cleaning, and safety checks for animals located at the ARBL or LaPorte facilities for the Foothills Campus. Monitors animal pens daily to ensure the health, safety and proper feeding of all animals.

     

    Maintains safe equipment and animal facilities at multiple locations. Aids in handling animals for experiments and routine care.

    Duty/Responsibility

    Monitor the condition and repair needs of the animal structures and equipment. Perform routine maintenance where appropriate or coordinate with vendors to get additional appropriate repairs and maintenance done. Maintain a clean appearance to the facility such as cleaning large pens, animal loading and unloading areas, painting and other routine maintenance duties as needed, and time allows. Snow removal in coordination with Foothills Facilities crew and Parking Services. Assist with management of heavy equipment and vehicles. Work with the farm manager to determine the best location for animals based on research needs.

    Provide guidance and training of new employees as directed by the ARBL Farm Manager and per prescribed operating procedures. Observe to make sure hourly staff are consistently following management’s prescribed operating procedures for animal care and maintenance and discuss with ARBL Farm Manager.
