    The Louisiana Special Schools are experiencing a critical shortage of certified teachers, school counselors, interpreters and educators of the Deaf or hard of hearing and Visually Impaired.

    Special School District

     

    The Special School District (SSD) was established by the Louisiana Legislature and serves over 1,800 students annually across Louisiana. Our mission is to provide compassionate, collaborative, and innovative educational opportunities for students with low incidence disabilities, meeting each student’s unique needs. Our goal is to ensure 100 percent of the students served in our schools and programs will leave with a clear path to success.

    Louisiana School for the Deaf

    The Louisiana School for the Deaf (LSD), established in 1852, has a long proud tradition of educating deaf and hard of hearing children in the state of Louisiana. We are dedicated to providing a quality education for all deaf and hard of hearing children by incorporating innovative teaching methods, rigorous curriculum, state-of-the-art technology, and the American Sign Language/English Bilingual Approach throughout our program. Children who are hard of hearing or have cochlear implants benefit from auditory access via spoken English language instruction. LSD provides extracurricular activities, leadership opportunities, and mentoring by successful deaf and hard of hearing adult role and language models. Students directly interact with teachers, staff, and peers daily.

    Minimum Qualifications

    + Must be at least 21 years of age and possess a high school diploma or equivalency. College degree preferred.

    + Must possess a current Driver's License and the ability to be certified through the State Driver Safety Program.

    + Must possess expressive and receptive sign language skills or must be willing to acquire such. The minimum acceptable Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) level for effective job performance is Intermediate.

     

    Job Specification

     

    Sub Teacher

     

    + Implement Louisiana School for the Deaf (LSD) and/or Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired (LSVI) instructional philosophy, program and curricula in the instruction or assistance of deaf, hard of hearing and/or low vision or visually impaired students.

    + Specify learner outcomes in clear, concise objectives; includes activities that develop objectives; identifies materials needed for lesson; and states method(s) of evaluation.

    + Organize available space, materials, and/or equipment to facilitate learning and promote a positive learning climate.

    + Maintain a safe physical environment.

    + Develop and maintain reasonable classroom rules for appropriate student behavior and the care of school property, facilities and equipment.

    + Maintain appropriate student-teacher relationship and respect the individual worth and dignity of each pupil.

    + Demonstrate knowledge of developmental physical management of students (use of adaptive devices and proper positioning techniques).

    + Use common sense and sound judgment.

    + Exhibit understanding of children with disabilities and their needs.

    + Maintain confidentiality of information in accord with requirements of law.

    + Exhibit knowledge of special education rules and regulations associated with implementation of state and federal law

    + Display dependability and punctuality in attendance and in meeting obligations.

    + Exhibit professional ethics.

    + Demonstrate appropriate and effective interpersonal skills.

    Sub Paraeducator

     

    + Assist the classroom/program teacher with related instructional activities under the direction of the teacher.

    + Work directly with students in small and/or large group activities. May work in a self-contained setting, under the direction of the teacher, with students who have emotional/behavioral disorders.

    + Assist the teacher with instructional preparation activities including development and duplication of learning materials, record keeping, etc. Prepares instructional materials and bulletin board displays.

    + Assist students with personal and/or developmental needs by pushing, loading or lifting wheelchairs, strollers, etc. Or: Assists students in furthering their vocational development in operating, loading or lifting indoor/outdoor maintenance equipment and supplies for on-the-job training.

    + Operate media equipment, such as film projector, overhead projector, VCR, DVD, smartboard, and/or augmentative communication devices, etc.

    + Clean and tidy classroom/work areas after student use.

    + Comply with school system policies and implement school philosophy and program.

    + Exhibit professional ethics.

    + Exhibit initiative.

    + Demonstrate appropriate and effective interpersonal skills.

    + Maintain confidentiality of information in accord with requirements of the law.

    + Recognize and follow established communication channels.

    + Make preparations to train coaches and athletes.

    + Provide for the care, upkeep and maintenance of athletic facilities and equipment and maintain an inventory of all equipment and uniforms.

    + Submit requisitions for equipment and uniforms.

    + Ensure the locker rooms and athletic facilities are ready for practice.

    + Prepare practice and game schedules.

    + Create a roster of all participating athletes and ensure that each has proper paperwork.

    + Promote and arrange for athlete tryouts.

    + Attend summer clinics.

    + Set up off season fund raisers.

    + Promote sports through the Deaf Community.
