    The Division 6 Corridor Development Engineer will serve as a liaison between NCDOT and Metropolitan Planning Organizations and Rural Planning Organizations, using their knowledge of NCDOT funding along with the needs defined in long-range transportation plans to formulate strategies for funding needed projects.

     

    The Division 6 Corridor Development Engineer will work with Planning Organizations to analyze long-range transportation plans that have been developed to determine which of the projects included in the plans are most suitable for submission into the Strategic Transportation Investments (STI) Prioritization system. The Corridor Development Engineer will actively participate in complex engineering studies to support the evaluation and prioritization of transportation improvements identified in the long-range transportation plan. This involvement may include contributing to the development of design concepts and performing traffic engineering analyses. These studies aim to determine the type and scope of improvements needed, estimate project costs, assess the potential for securing funding, and provide a preliminary evaluation of possible environmental impacts associated with proposed projects.

     

    The Division 6 Corridor Development Engineer will also work with the Planning Organizations to determine suitable candidate projects to be submitted for consideration for funding from the various funding sources outside of the STI Prioritization system. They will also work to support other planning studies and special projects or initiatives as assigned.

     

    This position reports to the Corridor Development Unit Manager in Transportation Planning Division but is located in Division 6 office at 558 Gillespie St., Fayetteville, NC 28302. There will be occasional travel to various areas in the Division, to the central office in Raleigh, and to other locations within or out of the state, such as for training and conferences. This position is anticipated to be filled on November 1, 2025 or after.

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

    Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

    + Thorough knowledge of civil engineering principles and practices pertaining to the planning, design, and operation of transportation infrastructure.

    + Considerable knowledge of Microsoft products including Excel, ArcGIS such as ArcPro, and knowledge of or the ability to learn other software as needed.

    + Experience communicating ideas, concepts, and information to elected officials, citizens, and engineers.

    + Working knowledge of transportation planning activities at the federal, state, and local levels.?

    + Knowledge of NCDOT’s strategic process of prioritizing transportation improvement investment activities.

    Additional Expectations:

    + Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of North Carolina is preferred.

    + Ability to attain competency in SAP-based financial and project management tools and applications.

     

    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

    Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and four (4) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

     

    Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
