    Position Summary

    Saint John's Preparatory School invites applications for the full-time (.83fte), benefit eligible position of Assistant Director of Residential Life. This position runs mid-August to early June.

     

    Saint John's Preparatory School is a Catholic/Benedictine, co-educational, day and boarding college preparatory school for students in grades 6-12, with boarding options beginning in the 9th grade. Saint John's Prep is located on the 3,000 acres of woods and lakes of Saint John's University's campus in central Minnesota.

     

    Since its founding in 1857, Saint John’s Preparatory School has provided exceptional education in the Catholic Benedictine tradition. Prep has continuously dedicated itself to both educational development and personal formation. Benedictine education calls for a lively interplay between rigorous thinking and the development of practices for a purpose-filled life.

     

    The Assistant Director of Residential Life will work in partnership with the Director of Residential Life (Dean of Student Life) to create and carry out the vision and mission of the SJP Residential Life Program. They will also provide leadership and guidance for the team of Faculty Residents. This person will serve as the first point of contact for all dorm related questions, emergencies, etc.

     

    They are expected to be prepared to make critical, sometimes life-impacting decisions as the first responder for students' needs during non-office hours, including nights and weekends.

     

    They will oversee and interact dynamically with students in the hall; suggest, create, and participate in activities; communicate with school personnel as needed; make decisions related to discipline and safety issues and administer medications and other duties.

    Responsibilities

    •Ensure all resident students' health and safety while in the school's care.

    •Create an inclusive, loving, family-like environment that focuses on positive relationships and authentic connections to best support the social-emotional needs of all residents.

    •Establish and maintain healthy and respectful relationships with students and parents.

    •Collaborate with the Director of Residential Life (Dean of Student Life) and other staff to address student conduct with an educational and developmental approach grounded in Benedictine Practices.

    •Manage the Residential Life program within the parameters of the budget provided/monitored by the Director of Residential Life (Dean of Student Life).

    •Maintain a high professional competence and expertise by participating in continuing education and job-related personal and professional growth experiences.

    •Serve as a steward of Saint Michael Hall's physical plant resources, equipment, and grounds while maintaining a welcoming and well-kept resident hall environment.

    •Represent the school in coordinating the After School Study program for all students. Connect with CSB/SJU to recruit college student tutors.

    •Be the first point of contact and authority in the dorm building with the ability to function in a 24-hour on-call environment and maintain productivity. Attend to a work phone (provided) 24/7 in case of emergency.

    •Respond to medical and mental health emergencies of the residential students.

    •Lead the team of Faculty Residents, lead team meetings and dorm initiatives, create schedules, and delegate assignments as needed.

    •Schedule appointments for residential students, transport them to appointments off campus, work with local providers, and manage the medical documentation/insurance, etc. of residential students.

    •Adjust to unpredictable circumstances and changing schedules – take an active role in creating the schedule and delegating tasks/work to the residential life staff.

    •Flex working hours in a way that meets the needs of the residential program and students.

    •Any other duties as assigned by the Director of Residential Life (Dean of Student Life)

    Qualifications

    Education: Bachelor's degree

    •Valid MN driver's license and acceptable driving record. Insurance requires a minimum age of 20 to drive our vehicles.

    •Ability to function in a 24-hour on-call environment and maintain productivity

    •Flexibility and the ability to adjust to unpredictable circumstances and changing schedules

    •Ability to flex working hours in a way that meets the needs of the residential program and students

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    •Experience in residential life at a boarding program or higher education

    •Experience connecting and working with international students

    •Experience working with adolescents

    •Awareness of educational software, Blackbaud or Schoology

    •Understanding of Residential Software, Orah

    PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

    •Ability to lift luggage, boxes, and packages up to 40 pounds

    •Ability to be alert/awake until 11 PM and ability to be responsive overnight if needed

    •Ability to drive fleet vehicles, including a 14-passenger van

    Benefits and Remuneration: Compensation for this position includes a salary of $40,453 for a 10-month term of employment which runs from mid-August and ends early June. The Assistant Director of Residential Life also receives a partly furnished 2-bedroom, apartment with kitchen and private bathroom, free community laundry, parking, utilities, and high-speed internet access year-round.

     

    •Summer Living: While the AD position is a 10-month appointment, we allow returning staff to remain in their apartments during the June and July non-working months. Stipends and summer provisional contracts may also be available for those wishing to gain further experience or compensation.

    •Pet Policy: Only allowed animals in a tank under 60 gallons. The Abbey (Campus) does not allow leashed or unleashed pets or domesticated animals on their Campus as it is a wildlife refuge. Reasonable accommodations will be made for any comfort animals with documentation.

    •Alcohol Policy: As the Abbey and University Campus is not "dry," our FR/AD apartments do allow alcohol. However, students are not permitted in staff apartments. This policy is in place to protect the staff and the boarding students.

    •Domestic Partner Policy: We, as Benedictines, practice hospitality and respect for all persons. However, we can only allow opposite gendered, married partners to live in the apartment on Campus.

    HEALTH INSURANCE

    Employees are eligible for coverage in the health insurance plan on the first of the month following their date of hire.     VISION PLAN

    LIFE INSURANCE

    The Order provides a Basic Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) policy to employees. This insurance becomes effective on the first of the month following date of hire. The amount of term insurance provided is based on your annual salary as follows:

    You may also purchase additional life insurance in increments of one, two, three, or four times your annual salary. There is also a dependent life insurance package available.

     

    Employer provided life insurance in excess of $50,000 is subject to imputed tax (a tax on the value of the premium).

    VACATION

    Paid vacation is accrued based upon FTE and the number of years employed. Vacation is cumulative from year to year to a maximum of 240 hours. Employees working 100% time receive the following:

    HOLIDAY PAY

    Employees receive paid holidays. The Order recognizes ten official holidays during the calendar year: New Years' Eve Day, New Years' Eve, Good Friday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Day after Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Leased employees may receive additional holidays.

    SICK LEAVE

    Full-time employees earn up to 9 days of sick leave per year, pro-rated based on FTE. Sick leave is cumulative from year to year up to a maximum of 720 hours (90 days). Employees may also use accumulated personal sick leave to care for ill family members.

    LONG-TERM DISABILITY

    After one year of benefit eligible employment, the Order provides coverage in the event of an illness or injury which prevents you from working. This plan provides a benefit which equals 60% of your basic monthly earnings to a maximum monthly benefit of $15,000. This benefit will be payable for the benefit duration, provided the employee is unable to perform the usual and customary duties of his/her occupation.     FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNTS / HEALTH SAVINGS ACCOUNTS

    These plans allow employees to set aside a portion of their salary on a pre-tax basis to pay for IRS approved expenses.

    TUITION ASSISTANCE - PREP SCHOOL

    The tuition assistance plan is an educational grant provided by the Order to a qualified child of a full time employee towards meeting the tuition costs at Saint John's Preparatory School. The dependent must meet the eligibility criteria in order to receive this benefit. Leased employees are not eligible for this benefit.

    TUITION REMISSION - EMPLOYEE

    Tuition remission is an educational benefit provided by the Order to full-time employees. A full-time employee and spouse (if applicable) are eligible for tuition free education benefits the first full semester after six months of employment. The payment of special fees is the responsibility of the employee. Full-time employees may enroll for one undergraduate course per term, which includes summer; up to a maximum of 2 courses per year. Leased employees are not eligible for this benefit.

    PARENTAL LEAVE

    A three week (15 days) paid leave will be granted to eligible employees due to the birth or adoption of a child, pro-rated based on FTE. New employees are eligible for this benefit after twelve months of employment.

    EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

    The Employee Assistance Program (Vital Work Life) is currently a free counseling resource available to all employees and immediate family members. EAP counselors can help you identify problems and concerns regarding family, marriage, emotions, alcohol or drugs, financial difficulties, legal issues and job stress. All contacts between you, your family, and the EAP are provided as a benefit from the Order and are kept strictly confidential.

    RETIREMENT PROGRAM

    The Order provides two 403(b) retirement plans: A Defined Contribution Plan and a Supplemental Tax Deferred Annuity Plan. These plans are administered by Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association (TIAA). Enrollment in the retirement plan will be effective the first day of the month following date of hire, unless the employee elects to opt-out.

    This voluntary plan offers an additional level of financial protection for you and your family in the event of a serious accident or illness.
