Responsibilities:
GENERAL SUMMARY
Supervises the sonographers in the Maternal Fetal Medicine Division of the University of Rochester Medical Center. Performs various technical procedures in applying non-ionizing high-frequency ultrasound waves to humans for diagnostic purposes. Exercises independent judgment and technical skills. Keeps current on new technologies and their applications. Supervises the MFM ultrasound staff team, responsible for the complete employee lifecycle (hiring, firing, evaluations, etc). Perform administrative duties necessary to promote the smooth operation of the laboratory. Responsible for applying and enforcing laboratory policies within the routine operation of the laboratory and its personnel.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Sonographer Duties
+ Performs ultrasound imaging and therapy in accordance with applicable scope and standards of practice and policies, values, and mission of the organization.
+ Adjusts equipment controls as needed to produce high-quality images and prepares/presents them, with other pertinent patient information, for timely interpretation.
+ Educates patients/families regarding procedure and/or treatment to be performed.
+ Prepares the room and patient for the exam to be performed. Uses an established work pattern to work efficiently and safely within an ultrasound environment. Reviews patient history and the physician's orders.
+ Educates patient regarding procedures, equipment, and exam to ensure patient's understanding and cooperation.
+ Maintains accurate patient record keeping by properly identifying images and ensuring images are sent to the PACS system correctly.
+ Performs and evaluates equipment quality control measurements. Adheres to safety policies.
Provide Supervision for Maternal Fetal Medicine Sonographer Staff.
+ Responsible for hiring and daily supervision of the staff sonographers within the MFM division.
+ Responsible for continual follow-up and monitoring of sonographers' personal development and participation in specially assigned, unique tasks essential to the laboratory's and its personnel's academic growth.
+ Enforce departmental policies that directly affect the laboratory and operations within it.
+ Acts as a direct liaison between the program manager and staff sonographers.
+ Responsible for yearly performance evaluations.
Scheduling for staff and oversight of patient flow
+ Prepares and assigns sonographer's work schedules and on-call rotations. Assigns daily lunch schedules based on staffing and patient flow.
+ Responsible for utilizing staff for special procedures (amniocentesis, CVS, Doppler, cardiac, endovaginal, etc.) and applying each sonographer's unique skills and availability.
+ Organizes the daily patient schedule to ensure efficient operation of the laboratory. including scheduling add-on patients during the day and anticipating efficient utilization of the scanning rooms.
+ Maintains smooth patient flow in the department. Continuously monitors the throughput of patients and accessibility of rooms and sonographers to patients per required examinations.

MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
+ Bachelor's degree in laboratory sciences and 4 years of clinical experience following registration Required
+ Or equivalent combination of education and experience
+ Experience in directing the work of a laboratory staff or equivalent combination of education and experience Preferred
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
+ Uses initiative and independent judgment Required
+ High standards of medical ethics with empathy and respect for patients Required
+ Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, employees, and physicians Required
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
+ (OBGYN) ARDMS or ARRT - Obstetrics and Gynecology upon hire required
