    Job Title: Phlebotomist I

    Job Description

    The main function of a Phlebotomist I is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.

    Responsibilities

    + Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, and record maintenance data.

    + Decontaminate and update patient information.

    + Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.

    + Explain the process of venipuncture, blood drawing, and other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) clearly and courteously.

    + Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.

    + Fully understand all physicians' orders.

    + Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.

    + Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.

    + Ensure all test requisitions or computer labels match the script 100%.

    + Package specimens for transport and store them according to the required temperature.

    + Place samples in appropriate collection containers/tubes, accurately label them, and follow procedures necessary for transport to maintain the integrity of the specimen.

    + Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.

    + Attend annual department trainings.

    + Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

    Essential Skills

    + Phlebotomy and specimen processing expertise.

    + Proficiency in patient care, particularly in blood draw, venipuncture, and drawing blood.

    + Experience in medical, pediatric, and geriatrics settings.

    + Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state of employment.

    + Minimum of 6 months' work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.

    + Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

     

    Additional Skills & Qualifications

     

    + High School Diploma or GED.

    + 0-2 years of experience in related fields.

    Work Environment

    This role typically operates in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting, where attention to detail and adherence to safety protocols are essential. Staff members are expected to dress in professional attire appropriate for a clinical environment.

    Pay and Benefits

    The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $19.00/hr.
