Description of Work

This position performs skilled work and specializes in at least one trade in connection with the maintenance, repair and/or construction of buildings and facilities, and associated systems. Position functions at the entry to journey level in a skilled trade such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing or HVAC. Position will also work towards obtaining appropriate licenses for operating and maintaining water and wastewater systems at select ferry terminals. Work assignments are moderately complex in nature and vary widely depending on the current needs of the Division.
Examples of common assignments include, but are not limited to, siding and roofing repairs, flooring repairs, exterior and interior lighting repairs and replacement, ferry ramp electrical issue troubleshooting, concrete work, lock/door handle replacement, restroom fixture repairs and replacement, water and wastewater system operation and maintenance, and water and sewage line repairs.
Employee would be expected to show a willingness to learn the various trades required of this position and obtain licenses as specified in the applicable section of this posting. Employee would also be expected to demonstrate basic organizational, planning, and administrative skills that could be refined as they progress towards higher level positions with more responsibility.
Position requires frequent travel as the service area includes the Cherry Branch, Cedar Island, Southport, and Pamlico River Ferry Terminals. Overnight travel is not regular but may be necessary for certain projects.
This position reports directly to a Maintenance Supervisor III who assigns daily tasks and trainings.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Management prefers applicants with the following:
+ Working knowledge of the methods, practices, and materials used in general maintenance and repair of buildings and building systems
+ Skill in the use of tools required in more than one moderately complex trade
+ Demonstrated ability to operate the more common types of power equipment
+ Demonstrated ability to read and interpret building codes
+ Demonstrated ability to follow oral and written instructions
Additional Expectations:
+ Physical strength sufficient to perform heavy physical tasks for extended periods of time.
+ Employee’s Performance Plan may require obtaining water and/or wastewater licenses by specific dates.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and one (1) year of progressive experience in the assigned trade areas; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualification May require current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by Title 40, Code of Federal Regulations Part 82, Subpart F.
