    Position Summary

    This is the intermediate level of the EHS Consulting classification hierarchy. Employees at this level solve more complex problems, in environmental, health, and / or safety areas of specialization, with general supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with greater independence. They effectively apply fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is fairly complex and varied. (NOTE: This position may serve as the entry level for individuals who have acquired a college degree with comparable experience external to the company, or for individuals who have acquired a Master's Degree in in an EHS field.) This position will provide Health & Safety field support for the Coal Combustion Products (CCP) and Plant Demolition & Retirement organizations in the Carolinas West Region.

    Responsibilities

    Develops and increases knowledge of the organization, procedures, company standards and analyzes and understands intermediate-level information, past practices and business objectives to provide field oversight of employee and contractor work and make appropriate recommendations to management/assigned project teams. Monitors the practices of assigned organizational EHS area, to facilitate compliance with company and/or regulatory policies and requirements in which to mitigate risks. Examples include providing intermediate-level regulatory-required and internal environmental or safety reports, intermediate-level support assigned environmental and safety training programs, intermediate-level support with the development and maintenance of procedures and programs to assist facilities in complying with environmental and safety laws and regulations, and to ensure that Duke Energy work procedures address compliance guidance and helping track regulatory changes, legislative activities and industry standards. Reviews contractor programs to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, Duke Energy EHS Handbook and CCP Supplemental requirements. Starts researching, developing, and/or evaluating intermediate-level programs, policies or activities within the discipline they are assigned which have small impact or level of complexity; solves a range of problems and develops solutions using standard-moderate procedures. Assists with providing information/consultation to management/assigned customers on existing EHS programs and policies. Examples include serving as an intermediate expert for advanced technical programs and compliance issues and supports company’s environmental or safety goals, strategies, programs and processes. With assistance from Enterprise EHS, the incumbent develops and maintains procedures and programs to assist facilities in complying with environmental or safety laws and regulations. Helps advanced teammates ensure that Duke Energy work procedures address compliance guidance. Assists with tracking basic regulatory changes, basic legislative activities and basic industry standards and helps advanced teammates assists with identifying needed changes to facility’s compliance programs. With appropriate leadership guidance they may assist with working with federal, state and local regulatory authorities to interpret regulations and laws. Supports Duke Energy on various internal/external industry committees and teams. Develops positive working relationships with peers, customers, employees and management to effectively complete work activities.

    Required/Basic Qualifications

    + Bachelors degree in Science, Health and Safety, Engineering or Other Related Degree

    + In lieu of Bachelors degree(s) listed above, High School/GED AND 7 year(s) related work experience

    Desired Qualifications

    + Masters degree in Business, Science, Health and Safety, Engineering or Other Related Degree

    + In addition to desired degree, 3 years related work experience

    + Professional Engineer and/or Project Management Professional and/or CSP and/or QEP and/or CHMM and/or CIH

    Additional Preferred Qualifications

    + Ability to manage EHS needs from multiple work sites

    Working Conditions

    + Field Mobility Classification – Work will be performed in various field locations, as needed, after the onboarding period. However, field employees are required to live within a reasonable daily commute to their assigned work location.

    + Office environment with exposure to PC terminal and keyboard

    + Outside work during all seasons.

    + Occasional overtime, weekend, outage and callout work.

    + Frequent field, work site, and facility visitation required.

    + Vehicle travel involved to field location; typical travel safety factors
