The Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) is seeking a motivated and enthusiastic Junior AI Application Developer to support the design, development, and deployment of intelligent applications. This role is ideal for recent graduates or early-career professionals who are eager to apply their programming and machine learning skills while continuing to learn and grow in a fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate is curious, collaborative, and passionate about applying AI to solve real-world problems.
This is a temporary position.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
+ Design, develop, and implement AI-based applications from concept to deployment.
+ Build, train, and evaluate machine learning and deep learning models.
+ Collect, preprocess, and analyze large datasets to ensure data quality.
+ Integrate AI models into production systems using APIs, microservices, and cloud platforms.
+ Collaborate with product managers, data engineers, and domain experts to deliver AI solutions aligned with business goals.
+ Monitor model performance, retrain, and optimize for accuracy, scalability, and efficiency.
+ Stay current with emerging AI technologies, tools, and best practices.
+ Ensure AI solutions follow ethical, responsible, and secure AI principles.
Required Skills & Experience
+ Education: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Data Science, Engineering, or related field (or equivalent practical experience).
+ Programming: Strong foundation in Python; familiarity with Java, C++, or JavaScript is a plus.
+ Mathematics & Statistics: Basic understanding of linear algebra, calculus, and probability/statistics.
+ Machine Learning: Coursework or project experience with supervised/unsupervised learning, or exposure to NLP/computer vision.
+ Frameworks: Familiarity with at least one ML library such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or scikit-learn.
+ Data Handling: Exposure to SQL and data manipulation tools (Pandas, NumPy).
+ Collaboration: Strong communication skills and eagerness to learn from peers and mentors.
Desired Skills & Experience
+ Internship, project, or coursework involving AI/ML.
+ Familiarity with version control (Git).
+ Exposure to cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure).
+ Basic knowledge of APIs and web services.
+ Working Knowledge of Wargaming and other DoD concepts uses of AI applications

The SMX salary determination process takes into account a number of factors, including but not limited to, geographic location, Federal Government contract labor categories, relevant prior work experience, specific skills, education and certifications. The proposed salary for this position is:
$78,200—$130,300 USD
