The Advanced Reasoning Group is hiring a **Principal Applied Scientist** at **Mountain View, CA** , or **Redmond, WA.**
The team is responsible for creating and delivering cutting-edge reasoning technologies that drive business outcomes for Microsoft and its customers built on our partnerships across the org. We are looking for a Principal Applied Scientist to deliver a state-of-the-art **shopping knowledge graph** to power amazing shopping experiences.
In this role you will have the opportunity to solve modeling problems around shopping knowledge graph. You’ll leverage multimodal techniques, facets, LLM-based generative methods and agentic process to curate and improve the shopping graph, to uplevel the shopping catalog.
You will need to ensure the approach is scalable, so optimization techniques such as SLM investment is needed. You’ll also have opportunity to build innovative shopping experiences using the rich catalog and agentic systems, e.g. build a deep research shopping agent, a catalog agent, and related ecosystems.
Starting January 26, 2026, Microsoft AI (MAI) employees who live within a 50-mile commute of a designated Microsoft office in the U.S. or 25-mile commute of a non-U.S., country-specific location are expected to work from the office at least four days per week. Responsibilities
+ Participate in design, implementation, and execution across a variety of features regarding data science, machine learning and knowledge graph.
+ Drive innovations in LLM reasoning, analytics applications, retrieval, ranking and generic Natural Language Processing (NLP), Computer Vision (CV) models used in an ads recommender systems.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
+ Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
+ OR Master's Degree in Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
+ OR Doctorate in Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
+ OR equivalent experience.
+ 1+ year LLM Generative AI experience with chatbot, reasoning, or similar technologies.
+ 4+ years of experience working with Machine Learning technologies (e.g. Natural Language Processing, Computer Vision, **Knowledge Graph** )
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Master's Degree in Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 9+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
+ OR Doctorate in Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
+ OR equivalent experience
+ Experience in knowledge graph building and entity linking.
+ 1+ year of experience developing end to end analytics solutions or ML systems for real world applications.
+ Have publications at peer-reviewed Data Science/AI conferences (e.g. KDD-Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining, CIKM- Conference on Information and Knowledge Management, SIGIR- Special Interest Group on Information Retrieval, NeurIPS- Neural Information Processing Systems, CVPR- Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition, ICML International Conference on Machine Learning, ICLR- International Conference on Learning Representations, ICCV- International Conference on Computer Vision, and ACL- Association for Computational Linguistics).
Applied Sciences IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $139,900 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.
