    JOB SUMMARY: This position’s primary responsibility is 911 response, inter-facility transports, public assistance, and Emergency Department assistance as needed.

    Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    Supervise and promote cohesive patient care management as a part of a prehospital multidisciplinary team.

     

    Provide thorough assessment, and treatment of medical, trauma, and environmental emergencies

     

    Respond to emergency / non-emergency calls to provide efficient and immediate care to the ill and injured

     

    Safely operating emergency vehicles in high-stress situations, within a variety of responses and road / traffic conditions.

     

    Assist and provide clinical and technical assessments and treatments as needed, for patient care in the Emergency Department and within the hospital facilities.

     

    Provide an immediate course of treatment en-route to hospital or at the scene

     

    Frequent use of technical equipment including IV infusion pumps, patient monitors, defibrillators, ECG machines, ventilators, etc. in order to treat, resuscitate, and stabilize patients

     

    Carry out certain invasive procedures when necessary, and within scope of practice, such as Intubation, IV insertion, Medication administration, Cardioversion, Cricothyrotomy, Thoracotomy, etc.

     

    Calculation and administration of medication dosages and medication infusion rates in response to dynamic patient conditions.

     

    Collection and interpretation of diagnostic data, coupled with clinical decision making, with the goal of promoting and restoring patients’ health.

     

    Continuous monitoring of the patient's condition

     

    Liaise with members of other emergency services, such as the police, fire departments, Quick Response Units and other ambulance services to ensure the appropriate patient care

     

    Positive interaction with members of the public and family members present at the scene

     

    Clean, decontaminate, and check vehicles and equipment to maintain a state of operational readiness.

     

    Perform routine maintenance of EMS equipment.

     

    Produce timely and thorough Patient Care Reports in regards to relevant patient history, condition, and treatment

     

    Interact with the community under the premise of promoting prevention and wellness.

     

    Remain abreast of current and changing practices with the contest of evidence based medicine.

     

    Precept, mentor and supervise students and new staff.

     

    Attend and participate in mandatory trainings or meetings, to include staff meetings and competencies, etc.

     

    PRN staff are required to attend all mandatory trainings and meetings as well as work a minimum of 3 shifts per 6-week schedule.

     

    Assisting in the Emergency Department is expected and allowed under the Nursing Delegation Rule and will be within the scope of practice to the level of Paramedic.

     

    Availability should be directed to the Charge Nurse. Such duties may include vital signs, IV insertions, preparation of rooms, direct observation of patients, procedure assistance, and various jobs that can assist in patient care and the Emergency Department flow. Specific department policies and procedures should be followed. Attendance in ED training opportunities are encouraged as they arise within the department. These expectations and job assignments are subject to change as the needs of the hospital deem appropriate. Patient transfers to the floor or other assignments to locations that inhibit prompt ambulance response times should be limited.

     

    KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE: 2 Years of practical experience in Emergency Medical Services preferred.

     

    EDUCATION: High school graduate, HiSET, or GED equivalent required. Successful completion of a Paramedic course or equivalent is required. Associate of Applied Science or equivalent is preferred.

     

    Must participate in annual refresher training and continuing education in order to maintain licensure.

     

    LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRY: State of Montana Paramedic or Registered Nurse with recent Certificate of Equivalency or Physician Assistant licensure required. National (NREMT) certification preferred. BLS, ACLS, and PALS are required. NRP and EVOC is required at the earliest available offering / within one year. PHTLS Preferred. Critical Care Transport endorsement within 18 months. Current Montana State driver’s license and excellent driving record is required.

     

    Aptitudes : Demonstrated ability for showing compassion. Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills necessary for effective, non-judgmental, and empathetic patient care, customer, and staff relations. Demonstrated physical strength and ability to carry more than 75 lbs. Demonstrated problem-solving skills. Demonstrated ability for reading comprehension, Writing composition and Arithmetic. Demonstrated cognitive, organizational, and emotional maturity to effectively manage multiple tasks, stresses, deadlines, difficult situations and/or customers. Demonstrated ability to adapt and receive feedback and a changing environment, which requires flexibility in scheduling and department assignments.
