    The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a half-time Research Study Coordinator 1.

     

    Research investigators are currently seeking a highly motivated and organized individual to serve as a site coordinator for the study: “Enhancing Rehabilitation Participation in Patients with SCI/D Using Motivational Interviewing”.

    Study Synopsis:

    The researchers will test whether patients treated by therapists trained in motivational interviewing have greater participation in therapy sessions and better functional, social, educational or occupational outcomes relative to patients treated by therapists without motivational interviewing training. They will also look at outcomes such as discharge to home, functional status and community participation after discharge from inpatient rehabilitation.

    The aims of this project are:

    1. To determine whether inpatients with spinal cord injury/disease (SCI/D) treated by physical therapists(PTs) and occupational therapists (OTs) who receive Motivational Interviewing (MI) and coaching demonstrate greater therapy participation compared to those treated by therapists who do not receive MI training and coaching.

    2. To determine whether inpatients with SCI/D treated by PTs and OTs who receive MI training and coaching demonstrate greater functional improvement at discharge from inpatient rehabilitation and greater community reintegration at 6 months after discharge compared to those treated by therapists who do not receive MI training and coaching.

    3. To document an effect of training and coaching on MI skills and explore potential moderators and mediators of the effect of the intervention on therapy participation.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    _Conducting Study Assessments – 50%_

     

    Schedule, track, and conduct study assessments with enrolled participants. Enter data from assessments into database according to project protocol. Review participant-submitted online surveys for completion and adverse events. Maintain confidentiality of participant records.

     

    _Participant and Staff Recruitment – 20%_

     

    Contact individuals from approved recruitment sources to see if they would be interested in participating. Field telephone calls and emails from individuals who have seen recruitment materials for the study and are interested in participating. Answer any questions individuals have about the research study. Obtain informed consent from prospective participants onsite. Process and send copies of consent and enrollment materials to enrolled participants. Ensure proper and prompt data entry of participant recruitment and enrollment outcomes. As needed, conduct in-person recruitment on the 4W inpatient rehabilitation unit at Harborview Medical Center (HMC). The procedures outlined will also be conducted for consenting and enrolling PT and OT staff participants at HMC.

     

    _Participant Contact & Monitoring – 10%_

     

    Act as the primary contact for participant inquiries regarding study protocol. Contact participants regarding missing data. Contact participants to information gather and follow-up on adverse events Send/conduct appointment and assessment reminders. Send and receive activity monitors from participants and process activity monitor data. Investigate and troubleshoot participant claims and issues. Document, track, and maintain logs for adverse events, protocol deviations, and issues that may affect data integrity.

     

    _Maintaining Data Collection Systems, Preparing Status Reports, & Data Cleaning – 10%_

     

    Assist in maintenance of data collection tools/platforms and notify research personnel of issues that arise. With general supervision from other research staff, maintain and update study data and recruitment databases, and clean study data and recruitment and enrollment outcomes in preparation for reports and data analysis.

     

    _Communication with Project Personnel – 6%_

     

    Notify appropriate research personnel regarding problems or complications reported by participants. Monitor adherence to study protocol. Attend twice-monthly project meetings with multi-site research team, report on study status at UW. Attend weekly meetings with study PI.

     

    _Regulatory Management and Submissions – 4%_

     

    Assist in submissions and management of both IRB applications and other supporting documentation. Work closely with contacts at main treatment site (SRALab).

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    + Two years of college level course work in a relevant academic area AND two years of experience performing work in support of clinical, biomedical, or behavioral research studies involving human subject.

     

    _Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration._

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    + Bachelor’s degree in social or biological sciences or a relevant academic area.

    + At least six months experience working on a research study examining health issues, or relevant education/experience.

    + Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.

    + Experience recruiting, screening, enrolling, and retaining participants via telephone and/or in person.

    + Experience conducting research interviews or assessments with participants via telephone and/or in person.

    + Lack of familiarity with motivational interview.

    + Strong verbal communication abilities; comfort and skill communicating over the telephone with individuals who have physical disabilities, pain, and other forms of physical and psychological distress.

    + Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and writing skills.

    + Excellent attention to detail and ability to adhere to research protocols.

    + Experience using databases such as Microsoft Access and REDCap.

    + Proficiency in using Microsoft Office suite, especially Word and Excel.

    + Completion of at least one course in research methods and statistics in a social sciences field.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

    + This position will work in clinical research involving human participants within UW Medicine and therefore clinical RSA training is required. The training requirement for this position includes UW Medicine-specific, sponsor-specific, as well as general training.

    + This is a part-time position. The successful candidate will work 20 hours during normal business hours Monday through Friday, but may be asked occasionally to complete participant study procedures in the evenings or weekends to accommodate certain participants’ schedules. The successful candidate will be stationed on the Harborview Medical Center campus.

    + A satisfactory result from a criminal background check will be required prior to hire.

     

    Compensation, Benefits and Position Details

    Pay Range Minimum:

    $44,256.00 annual

    Pay Range Maximum:

    $56,124.00 annual
