Responsibilities:
GENERAL PURPOSE
Performs a variety of technical procedures in the application of high frequency ultrasound waves to patients for diagnostic purposes. Demonstrates proficiency in complex transthoracic and stress echocardiography that is seen with structural and heart failure programs. With guidance from Senior Sonographers, participate in cardiac device interrogations and echo guided procedures. Uses highly skilled techniques to assist in clinical decision making and serves as a physician extender.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
+ Performs routine and specialized independent echocardiographic studies, including transthoracic, stress echocardiographic techniques, transesophageal and contrast exams as needed at all inpatient and outpatient facilities.
+ Participates with more senior sonographer to provide echo guidance on Cardiac Cath Lab Procedures, including TAVRs, RVBXs, RHC/VAD RAMP studies and any additional new technologies.
+ With guidance from more senior sonographer, performs comprehensive VAD interrogations in collaboration with the VAD coordinator to optimize VAD function based on patient’s clinical status to become independently capable of performing complete VAD interrogations.
+ Obtains pertinent patient history to optimize exam for appropriateness.
+ Reviews old echocardiographic studies for correlation.
+ Prepares exam room and ultrasound equipment to perform cardiac ultrasound studies in accordance with universal precautions to ensure patient safety per approved protocols, policies and procedures.
+ Communicates with patient in a manner that is appropriate for patient understanding.
+ Obtains vital signs, including blood pressure, heart rate, height and weight.
+ Evaluates any contraindications that may be limiting to exam completeness.
+ Uses proper patient positioning, in addition to ergonomically correct scanning techniques, to ensure patient and sonographer comfort and safety.
+ Applies independent judgement during the exam to ensure appropriate anatomical, pathological and clinical conditions are accurately captured in the exam images per current URMC Echocardiography policies and procedures.
+ Performs necessary cardiac measurements to generate preliminary findings and image acquisition/storage to support the interpreting physician of the finalized diagnostic report.
+ Assists with education and training of new sonographer hires, cardiology fellows and student interns.
+ When applicable, participates in research echoes with differing protocols and specific credentialing.
+ Demonstrates radiation safety competency to perform ASA, Pericardiocentesis and ICE procedures under the supervision of an echo attending or an interventional Cardiologist in the Cath Lab.
+ Maintains active registry status in adult cardiac sonography (RDCS/RCS) through continuing professional educational credits.
+ Attends monthly echo fellow conferences at URMC.
+ Attends local and national Echocardiography/Cardiology conferences to increase clinical knowledge base.
+ Maintains active status in BLS (Basic Life Support).
+ Keeps lab and exam rooms in clean, working order, including cleaning transducers, in accordance with lab policy.
+ Prepares exam rooms between studies.
+ Troubleshoots day-to-day operations, equipment malfunction, and inventory/products.
Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
+ Associate's degree and 5 years of progressively responsible experience as a Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer in a clinical or hospital environment required
+ Bachelor's degree preferred
+ Or equivalent combination of education and experience
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
+ Sound knowledge of cardiology, cardiovascular hemodynamics, doppler physics/instrumentation, cardiac and vascular ultrasound technologies required
+ Compliant with UR Radiation Safety Standards required
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
+ RDCS - Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer upon hire required or
+ RCS - Registered Cardiac Sonographer upon hire required and
+ RVT - Registered Vascular Technologist upon hire preferred
