    FACULTY VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

    CUNY SPH is proud to host the Sexual and Reproductive Justice (SRJ) Hub, a national leader in research, education, and advocacy advancing sexual and reproductive health, rights, and justice through interdisciplinary, community-centered, and equity-driven approaches. The SRJ Hub builds collaborative networks among scholars, students, practitioners, policymakers, and communities to transform public health research, education, and practice in service of reproductive freedom and justice.

     

    We invite applications for the Byllye Avery Endowed Professor in Sexual and Reproductive Justice. This is a senior faculty position for a distinguished scholar of national and international prominence in the Department of Community Health and Social Sciences. Named for Byllye Yvone Avery, a trailblazer in advancing global sexual and reproductive justice through providing health care services, education and advocacy, the endowed professor will shape the next era of scholarship, training, and public engagement in sexual and reproductive justice at CUNY SPH.

    The Endowed Professor will:

    + Provide visionary leadership in advancing research, teaching, and practice in sexual and reproductive justice.

    + Work closely with the Department Chair in coordinating the Master of Public Health Degree Concentration in Sexual and Reproductive Justice and Health.

    + Develop, expand, and sustain a nationally and internationally recognized research portfolio, including interdisciplinary, community-engaged, and policy-relevant scholarship.

    + Mentor faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and students, cultivating the next generation of sexual and reproductive justice scholars and practitioners.

    + Collaborate with the SRJ Hub, SPH’s academic departments, centers, and institutes, and with communities, advocacy organizations, and policymakers to translate research into practice and policy impact.

    + Expand external funding opportunities from governmental, philanthropic, and other sources to support the Hub and its affiliated projects.

    + Contribute to the broader intellectual and institutional life of CUNY SPH and CUNY, including fostering collaborations across disciplines and campuses.

     

    This position is based in New York City and will begin in Fall 2026.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Ph.D. degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

     

    + Doctoral degree (PhD, DrPH, ScD) in public health or related discipline, or JD, MD, or other terminal degree in a related field.

    + A distinguished record of scholarship or achievement, publication, and externally funded research in areas related to sexual and reproductive health, rights, or justice.

    + Demonstrated excellence in teaching, mentoring, and training at the graduate and/or doctoral level.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Evidence of excellence in teaching, and an outstanding track record of community-based participatory research, policy impact, or advocacy-oriented scholarship commensurate with an appointment at the rank of professor, with tenure upon appointment subject to CUNY Board of Trustees approval.

    + National and international recognition as a leader in the field

    + Experience building and leading interdisciplinary teams and partnerships.

    + Demonstrated ability to secure large-scale research funding across a range of governmental, philanthropic, and nongovernmental sources

    + Significant institutional leadership experience, such as directing research centers, institutes, programs or major collaborative initiatives.

    + Commitment to innovative, justice-centered pedagogy and capacity to mentor faculty, staff and students from diverse backgrounds.

    + Commitment to advancing equity and justice in public health research and education.

    COMPENSATION

    $180,000 - $200,000

     

    CUNY offers faculty a competitive compensation and benefits package covering health insurance, pension and retirement benefits, paid parental leave, and savings programs. We also provide mentoring and support for research, scholarship, and publication as part of our commitment to ongoing faculty professional development.

     

    CUNY is in the process of implementing salary schedule increases. Once implemented, salaries of eligible employees will be adjusted by 3.25% effective 9/1/2025 and 3.5% effective 9/1/26, in accordance with the terms of the PSC-CUNY collective bargaining agreement.
