Our Weights and Measures Inspectors travel to every community in Montana, impacting nearly everyone who lives and travels through the state. This position involves inspecting, testing, and certifying all types of weighing devices—from truck scales to livestock scales, deli scales, and even cannabis scales. We ensure their accuracy to promote a fair and equitable marketplace. Inspectors typically work a 4-day, 10-hour schedule, with flexible options available. A successful candidate will be comfortable operating and driving large trucks, pickups, and various types of test equipment. This work takes place across diverse geographical settings and in all kinds of weather conditions. *This position is for someone who loves traveling Montana! Possible living locations could be in Central Montana area. The successful candidate will be assigned a work area and will travel to assigned locations within their region.* *This role involves frequent travel, up to five days per week* *KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:* The successful candidate will be placed into our apprenticeship based on their existing experience and qualifications. Here's a quick overview of how you can progress through our Weights and Measures Inspector Apprenticeship: * Weights and Measures Inspector 1: Candidates must have ability to develop and learn to obtain certifications. The candidate must possess, or be able to obtain a valid class A, or B, Type 1 or 2 Commercial Driver’s License for the State of Montana. * Weights and Measures Inspector 2: Candidate has passed any three of fifteen professional certification exams offered through the NCWM. * Weights and Measures Inspector 3: Candidate has passed any six of fifteen professional certification exams offered through the NCWM. * Weights and Measures Inspector 4: Candidate has passed any nine of fifteen professional certification exams offered through the NCWM. * Weights and Measures Inspector 5: Demonstrates and performs all competencies identified within the program criteria. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to learn the Weights and Measures Laws, Administrative Rules, and Handbooks 44, 130, and 133 and a demonstrated ability to apply these laws/rules/codes effectively in the field. This role requires not only technical expertise but also interpersonal skills to navigate complex interactions with consumers, retailers, Registered Service Agencies, their employees and other stakeholders. If you are the right person for this opportunity, you will have the following knowledge, skills or abilities: *_Interpersonal Skills: _* * The ideal candidate must be able to provide feedback while demonstrating empathy to understand and address the concerns of all parties involved. * The ability to clearly explain complex technical findings in a patient and approachable manner. * Candidates must possess strong conflict resolution skills and the ability to find solutions through diplomacy and negotiation, ensuring positive outcomes while upholding code compliance. * Providing exceptional customer service is essential. * Candidates must also be adaptable to changing circumstances and maintain a logical approach to problem-solving, with a focus on life safety. * The successful candidate must be able to develop and maintain positive relationships with all stakeholders and work effectively both independently and as part of a team. *_Technical Knowledge and Abilities: _* * Ability to gain knowledge of state-adopted Laws, Rules, Codes, and policies applicable to the position is required. * Possess or can obtain a Montana Class A, or B type 1 or 2 Commercial Drivers License (CDL). * The ability to present technical information in a clear and understandable way is essential for educating stakeholders and ensuring compliance. * Candidates must be able to manage their work schedules with minimal oversight and meet deadlines consistently. * The ability to identify complex problems, review related information, and evaluate and recommend options, with a strong emphasis on equity in the marketplace is crucial * The ability to drive and operate specialized equipment safely and efficiently in all parts of Montana, in all weather situations up to 5-days a week. * Installation and use requirements for a variety of weighing and measuring devices and equipment. * Principles and practices of mathematics including algebra. *MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS* Candidates with a strong mix of the attributes listed in the above Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs) are desired. Candidates may demonstrate competency in the KSAs through experience, formal education (including certificates, or credentials.), or a combination of both. Candidates may demonstrate competency in the KSAs through at least 6 months of experience, formal education (including certificates or credentials.) or a combination of the two. Candidates should clearly describe how their experience and education meets the identified KSAs and provide examples in their cover letter that demonstrate their qualifications.
