GENERAL SUMMARY:
TheDesignated Institutional Official (DIO)is the senior leader responsible for the oversight, accreditation, and strategic direction of all Graduate Medical Education (GME) programs sponsored by Henry Ford St. John Hospital. The DIO has the authority and accountability to ensure that all residency and fellowship programs comply with Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) requirements, as well as the standards of other applicable accrediting, certifying, or regulatory bodies (e.g., CPME, CODA).
The DIO leads institutional efforts to sustain a robust, learner-centered clinical learning environment that prioritizes patient safety, quality of care, health equity, professionalism, and physician well-being, as required by ACGME Institutional Requirements. This role collaborates closely with Henry Ford Health (HFH) GME leadership to ensure alignment with HFH’s mission, priorities, and system-wide policies.
The DIO Reports directly to the Chief Medical Officer, Henry Ford St. John Hospital and The Chief Education Officer, Henry Ford Health or designee.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Institutional Accreditation and Regulatory Compliance
• Serve as the ACGME-recognized DIO with ultimate authority and accountability for GME at the Sponsoring Institution.
• Ensure continuous compliance with ACGME Institutional, Common, and specialty-specific Program Requirements.
• Direct institutional preparation for and responses to ACGME annual updates, site visits, and other reviews.
• Ensure compliance with additional accrediting or oversight bodies (e.g., CPME, CODA) for all relevant programs.
2. GMEC Leadership and Policy Development
• Oversee the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) to ensure compliance with ACGME requirements.
• Ensure accurate GMEC documentation, reporting, and timely policy development and updates.
• Lead institutional GME policy development in alignment with HFH system standards.
3. GME Program Quality, Safety, and Performance
• Oversee the accreditation status, learning environment, and performance of all residency and fellowship programs.
• Implement systematic quality improvement and address underperforming programs.
• Ensure educational programs support safe, high-quality patient care and learner well-being.
4. Institutional Leadership and Strategic Integration
• Align GME with Henry Ford – St. John Hospital and HFH system mission, strategy, and clinical priorities.
• Advocate for resources including protected time, infrastructure, and faculty development.
• Partner with HFH GME and UGME leadership to ensure integration of policies, processes, and best practices.
5. Resident, Fellow, and Program Director Support
• Promote learner well-being, professionalism, and compliance with due process standards.
• Provide mentorship and leadership development for Program Directors and faculty.
6. Faculty and Leadership Development
• Lead faculty development initiatives consistent with ACGME and institutional priorities.
• Support educational innovation, mentorship, and scholarship among faculty.
7. Data, Reporting, and Institutional Risk Management
• Oversee accreditation documentation (ADS, surveys, applications, match data, national reporting).
• Collaborate with finance and reimbursement teams on compliance, accuracy, and optimization of GME cost reports and revenue streams.
Manage GME-related legal, compliance, and risk issues
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
• MD or DO (or equivalent international medical degree)
• Board certification in a recognized medical specialty
• Active, unrestricted medical license in the State of Michigan (or ability to obtain prior to start date)
• Current or planned clinical practice at Henry Ford St. John Hospital
• Minimum of 5 years of progressive leadership experience in Graduate Medical Education (e.g., Program Director, Associate DIO, GMEC Chair/Member)
• Comprehensive knowledge of ACGME accreditation processes, institutional compliance, and program oversight
Preferred Qualifications:
• Proven leadership experience at the institutional level in GME administration
• Active involvement in scholarly activity (e.g., research, peer-reviewed publications, quality improvement, curriculum innovation)
• Leadership or active participation in national educational organizations, committees, or task forces
• Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills with the ability to lead across disciplines and departments
