    WSP is currently seeking a highly skilled and experienced **Lead Environmental Scientist and Project Manager** to join our team in the Upper Midwest (MN, IA, ND, SD, WI, IL). The ideal candidate will have a strong background in biological or environmental science, project management, and construction oversight. This role involves managing large teams, overseeing complex projects, and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations. This position would be based in our **Minneapolis, MN, Madison, WI, or Chicago, IL offices,** with the option for hybrid or remote working if necessary.

     

    Your Impact

     

    To support our growing workload, WSP is looking for a professional Environmental and Natural Resources focused Project Manager with a background in the energy market. This professional will join our interdisciplinary team of professionals in our Midwest Region, focused on impact assessment for the social, natural, and physical environment to support a variety of clients and projects. Job functions include:

     

    + Manage environmental compliance, biological and ecological resource evaluation, and construction compliance for infrastructure and energy projects.

    + Develop and implement quality assurance/quality control programs, ecological resource assessments, and surveys.

    + Coordinate with federal and state agencies for permitting and consultation.

    + Prepare business development plans, proposals, and contract extensions.

    + Manage project budgets, workload planning, and strategic recruitment.

    + Oversee a team of field biologists, subcontractors, technical experts, and compliance specialists.

    + Conduct field surveillance and monitoring for sensitive biological resources and water quality, as needed.

    + Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal environmental permits and regulations.

    + Represents the company at public or regulatory meetings.

    + Assist with managing routing/siting studies, analyses, and associated reports

    + Work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams which could include engineers, attorneys, planners, permitting and environmental specialists, and real estate experts

    + Prepare and monitor project scope, schedule, and budget

    + Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

    + Participates in preparation of proposal and/or marketing materials, including qualifications, scopes of work, and fee estimates.

     

    Who You Are

    Required Qualifications

    + B.S. in Environmental, Biological or Ecological Sciences

    + 7+ years of experience obtaining and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations in the energy and transportation sectors. Experience with mining sector is a plus.

    + Experience with biological permitting, compliance inspection, and project management assistance contracts.

    + Experience working in team environment to site facilities in the energy sector minimizing environmental, visual and customer impacts considering the companies and projects business requirements.

    + Experience leading wetland delineation efforts and preparing permit application materials

    + Strong writing and communication skills and team player

    + Strong troubleshooting and critical self-assessment skills.

    + Proven ability to manage large teams and complex projects.

    + Ability to develop and implement safety programs and risk management strategies.

    + Experience routing/siting or permitting linear facilities (roadways, rail, electric transmission lines, pipelines) is preferred.

    + Experience conducting natural resources constraints analyses for energy, industrial, and transportation facilities.

    + Experience writing or contributing to NEPA compliance documentation is a plus.

    + Travel may be required.

    + Must be able to pass a Fit for Duty Exam / Medical Exam.

    + Must successfully complete and pass WSP’s Motor Vehicle screening.

    + Certifications such as USFWS Biological Monitor, OSHA 10-Hour Certification, eRailsafe, MSHA and others are a plus.

    + Familiarity with AASHTO and DOT specifications and processes.

    + This role is subject to a client-mandated drug/alcohol testing policy. As such, employee may be subject to random drug/alcohol tests. A copy of this policy will be provided during employee onboarding and is available upon applicant request.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Master’s Degree is preferred.
