    Overview

    Telecommunications Mechanic II (TAFB-2025-23871):

    Bowhead seeks a skilled Telecommunications Mechanic II to provide full-spectrum installation, maintenance, and repair support for the Base Telecommunications System (BTS) at Travis AFB. This position plays a critical role in ensuring uninterrupted mission-essential communications for base operations, medical facilities, and tenant organizations. The Telecommunications Mechanic II will support Outside Plant (OSP) and Inside Plant (ISP) systems, switching platforms, VoIP infrastructure, and structured cabling systems, performing both corrective and preventive maintenance in accordance with contract requirements.

    Responsibilities

    Essential functions will include:

    + **Installation & Repair** – Perform installation, relocation, and removal of copper and fiber optic cable, jacks, terminations, and equipment in compliance with OEM, TIA/EIA, NEC, and UFC 3-580-01 standards

    + **Switch & VoIP Support** – Assist in the operation, monitoring, and troubleshooting of switching systems, CUCM/VoIP platforms, and voicemail servers to maintain mission availability.

    + **Preventative Maintenance** - Conduct inspections, testing, cleaning, and adjustments to identify and resolve issues before service degradation occur.

    + **Outage Response** – Respond to routine, serious, emergency, and catastrophic outages within required PWS timelines; restore services, verify clearances, and complete required documentation.

    + **Database & Records Management** – Update CAIRS/TMS and CVC systems with accurate service order, circuit, and plant data to support accountability and future troubleshooting.

    + **Testing & Quality Assurance** – Perform acceptance testing, OTDR/Fluke cable certification, and fault isolation with industry-standard tools; maintain quality control records per the contractor’s Quality Control Plan.

    + **Safety & Compliance** – Follow OSHA standards, confined space protocols, hazardous materials controls, and accident reporting procedures as required.

    + **Customer Support** – Provide assistance for base operators, perform telephone feature programming, and ensure end-users have reliable and documented service.

    + Other duties as assigned

    Qualifications

    + Education

    + **Required:** High school diploma or equivalent with formal technical training in telecommunications or electronics.

    + **Preferred:** Completion of trade school or military technical training in telecommunications systems (e.g., U.S. Air Force 3D1X2 or equivalent).

    + Years of experience

    + **Minimum:** 3–5 years of progressively responsible experience in installation, maintenance, and repair of telecommunications systems.

    + **Preferred:** 5+ years with direct experience supporting DoD BTS environments, including both copper and fiber OSP/ISP work.

    + Required skills or certifications

    + **Mandatory (per PWS):**

    + Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English.

    + Ability to meet OEM requirements for maintaining, installing, and operating communications equipment.

    + Compliance with DoD, OSHA, NEC, and TIA/EIA standards for telecom work.

    + **Industry-Recognized (Recommended):**

    + BICSI Installer II Copper and/or Fiber certification.

    + OSHA 10/30-hour Telecommunications or Construction Safety certification.

    + Fluke DSX/OTDR certification training.

    + Familiarity with Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CUCM), E-911, and CAIRS/TMS/CVC database systems.

    + Intermediate to advanced level skills in Microsoft Office software suite - Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint

    + Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contacts

    + Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team

    Physical Demands:

    + Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds

    + Must be able to stand and walk for prolonged amounts of time

    + Must be able to twist, bend and squat periodically

     

    SECURITY CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS: Must currently hold a security clearance at the Secret level. US Citizenship is a requirement for Secret clearance at this location.
