    Job Description

    Distinguishing Features of the Class :

    This position involves responsibility for performing a variety of skilled repair and maintenance work on a variety of trucks, mowers and other equipment and machinery. General supervision is received from a higher level supervisor, permitting considerable leeway for planning technical details of each assignment. General supervision may be exercised over a small number of helpers and/or laborers. Does related work as required.

    Typical Work Activities and Expectations:

    + Performs skilled operations in repairing and rebuilding gasoline-powered equipment, including trucks, tractors, passenger cars, power mowers, roto-tillers, chloroboats, and stump remover;

    + Overhauls, repairs, and lubricates tractors, mowers and related equipment;

    + Repairs or overhauls brake systems, differentials, carburetors, clutches, transmissions, and front and rear axles;

    + Grinds adjusts, and backlaps a variety of power driven and hand mowing machines;

    + Dismantles and rebuilds defective or damaged auxiliary equipment on tractors and mowers;

    + Operates machine shop equipment including lathes, grinders, drill press and other machines to make, rebuild or repair parts for above auxiliary equipment;

    + Performs necessary repairs to machines, tools and other shop equipment used in work;

    + Converts conventional machinery to use for special purposes;

    + Designs, builds, and paints steel and wooden playground equipment;

    + Does arc and acetylene welding;

    + Makes body and fender repairs;

    + Grinds valves and fits new bearings, pistons and rings;

    + Assembles and times engines;

    + Adjusts steering mechanisms and aligns wheels;

    + Performs a variety of related duties as required.

    Full Performance Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Personal Characteristics and Key Qualities:

    + Thorough knowledge of standard automotive repair methods and terminology and tools of the trade;

    + working knowledge of machinist and electrical trades;

    + ability to make difficult repairs to automotive and other mechanical equipment;

    + ability to work from plans and specifications and to follow rough sketches and oral instructions;

    + skill as a general equipment mechanic;

    + mechanical aptitude;

    + good motor and hand and eye coordination;

    + manual dexterity;

    + physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

    Job Qualifications

    (A) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and three years of experience in the maintenance and repair of automotive equipment, mowers or related motor equipment; OR

     

    (B) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by (A) above.
