    Land, Buildings & Real Estate (LBRE) is the operational core of Stanford University’s physical campus.     Department Introduction:

    The Stanford Land Use & Environmental Planning (LUEP) office staff have professional expertise in the areas of land use and community planning, environmental regulation and permitting, transportation planning, mapping and spatial analysis, conservation biology, archaeology and historic preservation. We work with partners in LBRE (and other university offices) to secure land use approvals from public agencies and to monitor compliance with permit requirements. LUEP is the lead LBRE office for the Santa Clara County General Use Permit (GUP).

    Position Overview:

    The GIS Specialist supports LUEP and LBRE projects by performing advanced GIS analyses, maintaining spatial databases, and developing web-based mapping solutions. This role emphasizes ArcGIS Online (AGOL) and coordination with GIS users in LBRE to ensure high-quality spatial data and application delivery.

    Key Responsibilities:

    + Develop, maintain, and enhance GIS spatial databases, including versioned geodatabases, metadata, and spatial datasets from multiple sources (CAD, GPS, survey, tabular data).

    + Conduct spatial analyses, 3D modeling, and cartographic production to support LBRE, Land Use & Environmental Planning (LUEP), and Heritage Services (HS), and Conservation Biology projects.

    + Build, configure, and maintain ArcGIS Online (AGOL) web maps, applications, and dashboards; ensure accessibility and functionality for internal and external users.

    + Collaborate with GIS groups across departments to coordinate data updates, workflows, and application development.

    + Provide technical support for web mapping platforms, online GIS tools, and GIS software, including troubleshooting and user training.

    + Perform data conversion, editing, and quality control to maintain data accuracy, consistency, and compliance with metadata standards.

    + Support the production of presentation materials, reports, and visualizations using GIS outputs for internal and stakeholder communication.

    + Participate in field data collection using GPS and coordinate integration of field and office-based data.

    + Maintain and support GIS hardware, plotters, scanners, and other peripheral equipment as needed.

    Required Qualifications:

    + Bachelor’s degree required, Masters preferred, in Geography, GIS, Environmental Science, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, or related field.

    + Minimum five years of experience with ESRI products, including ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, and ArcGIS Online.

    + Proficiency in AGOL-ESRI, web mapping applications, and spatial data management.

    + Experience with spatial analyses, 3D modeling, and GIS database maintenance.

    + Familiarity with web technologies (HTML, JavaScript, web design tools) and basic AutoCAD.

    + Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office suite, graphics applications (Adobe Photoshop/Acrobat)

    + Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively across teams, with strong attention to detail and quality.

    + Strong communication skills for presenting GIS results and providing user support.

    Physical Requirements*:

    + Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, stand/walk, sit, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.

    + Occasionally twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp use a telephone, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 20 pounds.

    + Rarely kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), grasp forcefully; reach/work above shoulders, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 21-40 pounds.

    Working Conditions:

    + May include work outdoors: work at heights ≥ ten feet: field work may include working on uneven work surfaces, and/or around construction sites.

    + Frequent local travel.

    + Occasional business related overnight travel.

    The expected pay range for this position is $104,368.00 to $120,550.00 per annum.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
