    Job Summary

    The Administrative Director, Capacity Management in the Michigan Medicine Capacity Operations and Real-time Engagement Center (M2C2) is responsible for overseeing and optimizing various aspects of inpatient flow across the Adult, Mott and Von Voigtlander hospitals. Reporting to the Associate Chief Medical Officer, Capacity and Operations, this role involves planning, coordination, and management of patient movement to ensure efficient and effective healthcare delivery and has direct oversite of the transfer center, patient flow and clinical expediter teams as well as embedded support staff within M2C2. The director will work closely with various departments, including nursing, providers, administration, ancillary support departments and information technology, to implement best practices and improve patient throughput.

    Responsibilities*

    + Strategic and Operational Planning: Provide strategic and operational planning for staffing, fiscal and material resources. Direct the development and implementation of new systems, policies and programs, ensuring compliance with agency regulations and professional standards and alignment with organizational goals and objectives.

    + Financial Planning and Management: Develop, implement and monitor short- and long-term budgets to support the department, working with Finance and Human Resource Business Partners and the Associate Chief Medical Officer to finalize the annual operating budget. For variances to the budget, create and implement corrective action plans to remain on target.

    + Innovation: Analyze all aspects of current operations for Patient Flow, Admitting, Transfer Center and Clinical Expediters for potential improvement opportunities.Work with segment leaders, nursing, providers and departmental staff to identify any issues or barriers to optimal patient care and volume growth as it pertains to inpatient flow. Employ continuous improvement practices to innovatively address barriers to admission, flow and discharge.

    + Workforce Planning and Talent Development: Forecast workforce planning and talent development needs, adjusting the calculations as necessary as demand shifts. Contribute to the creation of annual staffing plans based on organizational strategy, benchmarks and staffing data. Allocate resources efficiently and effectively to ensure the achievement of department goals.

    + Engagement with Professional Associations and Community: Engage with professional associations, community leaders and elected officials to provide insights on healthcare needs and the value that M2C2 provides in the local community, in the state of Michigan and across the country. Plan and execute visits from other health systems and dignitaries as well as UM groups wanting to learn more about capacity management.

    + Mentorship and Leadership Development: Facilitate ongoing mentorship and leadership development for the staff who report directly to this role, setting specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound goals annually. Assess their developmental opportunities and align resources to support their growth.

    + Shared Governance and Core Competencies: Cultivate a shared governance structure among the managers and staff to build collegiality and foster psychological safety to improve patient flow processes and to enhance safe care.

    + System-wide Committee and Planning: Participate as a representative of M2C2 on organization-wide committees (Digital Disruption, Emergency Management, etc.), ensuring that the department is compliant with all shared plans.

    Required Qualifications*

    + Bachelor's degree in health administration, allied health, nursing or other related discipline

    + At least five years supervisory experience in a hospital setting

    + Minimum of three years of experience in capacity management in a hospital setting

    + In-depth understanding of hospital operations including patient flow

    + Ability to analyze operational problems and use data to inform decision making

    + Experience with successful change management

    + Demonstrated experience in meeting facilitation and project management

    + Excellent collaboration, team building and written and verbal communication skills

    + Demonstrated ability to manage multiple competing priorities

    Desired Qualifications*

    + Master's degree in health administration, allied health, business, nursing or other related discipline

    + Clinical experience in the inpatient hospital setting in a nursing or allied health professions

    + Certification or training in performance improvement programs such as Lean/Six Sigma or IHI Model for Improvement

    + Capacity management experience in an academic medical center

    Background Screening

     

    Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
