    Job Description

    Position Title: Mechanics Helper

     

    Salary Range: Regionally Competitive

     

    FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

     

    Immediate Supervisor: Executive Director of Facilities/Director of Service Building/General Mechanic Foreman

     

    Basic Function: The position involves performing facilities maintenance duties, including the repair, troubleshooting, and installation of general repair needs for school maintenance operations, as well as managing trucking, delivery, and receiving functions to ensure facilities and equipment are utilized at optimum levels. Frequently, the role includes assisting with necessary repairs and maintenance of Service Building mechanized equipment, as well as general building repairs for various areas, such as athletic complexes and playgrounds. These tasks encompass fencing, goal posts, backstops, football, soccer, baseball, and softball fields, and tracks. Additionally, the role requires operating delivery, maintenance, and snow removal equipment, including 4x4 snowplows, 5-ton dump trucks with snow plows, pulling large trailers, and using other small specialized equipment. The responsibilities also include lining and maintaining athletic fields and facilities, responding to emergency calls, and being responsible for the Corporation's tools and assigned vehicles. Occasionally, the position involves planning, developing, and estimating repair projects, collaborating with school supervisors and administrators, recommending supplies and tools, and attending professional meetings.

    Responsibilities

    + Assist in ensuring general mechanical operations are performed in accordance with approved policies and procedures.

    + Provide positive assistance to all personnel to improve overall departmental functions.

    + Assist with the development of specifications for general repair and maintenance materials, supplies, tools, special projects, and emergency needs.

    + Recommend new general repair products, materials, supplies, and tools.

    + Attend in-service training programs as needed.

    + Develop sketches, bills of material, and estimated costs for all work assigned.

    + Review cost statements for completed jobs, compare them with the original estimated costs, and explain variances, if any.

    + Work independently, take direction, accept responsibilities, and work well with others.

    + Use blueprints, manuals, and shop drawings to install all types of equipment, including building items, playground equipment, and maintenance materials.

    + Operate equipment such as trucks, vans, dump trucks, tractors, bobcats, and other specialized equipment.

    + Maintain and line athletic fields, lay sod, plant and trim trees and shrubs, and seed and fertilize yards and fields.

    + Perform truck driving, delivery, and receiving operations, including loading and unloading all types of items, such as food carts, boxes, materials, supplies, and equipment.

    + Operate snow removal equipment, including 4-wheel drive snow plows and/or tractors.

    + Hook up, pull, back up, load, and unload trailers.

     

    Follow the work order system as assigned and complete departmental forms.

     

    + Work with the preventive maintenance program.

    + Perform related duties as required or assigned.

    Qualifications

    + Required Experience or Training: The candidate must be a high school graduate or equivalent, with a minimum of two years of experience in building and grounds maintenance. Basic computer skills are required, and the candidate must possess a valid CDL license. Additionally, the ability to lift up to 60 pounds and successfully pass a pre-employment lifting test is necessary for this position.

    + Desired Experience or Training: Preferred qualifications include post-secondary training related to general construction and maintenance. Experience with truck, trailer, and delivery operations is also desirable. Candidates should be proficient in computer skills, including the ability to access the internet, send and receive electronic emails, and manage documents.

    + Special Requirements: The candidate must have a general knowledge of all aspects of the construction trades, methods, and practices as they apply to school facilities. An ability to estimate and control maintenance costs, as well as stimulate cooperation among fellow employees, is crucial. Strong communication skills are necessary to provide feedback on work in progress and to ensure good customer service is maintained.

     

    Working Conditions

     

    + Mental Demands: Must be able to follow written and verbal instructions, prioritize tasks, and respond to facility-related issues in a timely and effective manner. Requires the ability to maintain awareness of safety protocols, use sound judgment when operating equipment or handling cleaning agents, and adapt to changing schedules or emergencies. Attention to detail, reliability, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team are essential.

    + Physical Demands: Must be able to work in confined spaces, on ladders, rooftops, and in various indoor and outdoor environments. Must be able to lift 60 pounds without assistance and safely handle tools and equipment for extended periods.

    + Environmental Conditions: Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments, including garages, maintenance areas, and occasionally on district grounds. The position involves regular exposure to noise, grease, oils, fuel, vehicle exhaust, and mechanical tools or equipment. Tasks may require working in awkward or confined spaces, lifting heavy parts, and standing or bending for extended periods. Work may be performed in varying weather conditions, and the individual must be available for routine and emergency repairs as needed. Proper safety equipment and procedures are essential to ensure personal and workplace safety. Must be able to handle stress.
