Incumbent of this position performs all types of electrical construction and maintenance work for LSP and supervises skilled inmate craftsmen (5 – 10) in the Maintenance Department. LSP encompasses 3,424,522 square feet of enclosed building space in 489 buildings. Maintains 26.5 miles of high voltage overhead wiring and 10 miles of underground high voltage lines (13,200 volts) and performs maintenance on over 500 poles and pads and oil filled and dry type transformers.
Louisiana State Penitentiary (LSP) is the state’s only Class 1A facility and the only correctional facility providing custody and control of adult male inmates who have been sentenced to death.
Minimum Qualifications
Two years of the required experience for the following minimum qualifications must have been on-the-job experience:
Four years of experience or training in the electrical trade, two years of which must have been working with specialized systems such as high-voltage distribution lines, power plants, or heavy, high-voltage mechanical or industrial equipment, or with electrical or electronic systems such as traffic signals.

Job Duties and Other Information
Job Duties:
+ Performs highly technical work and supervises skilled inmate craftsman in electrical work and in the performance of all electrical tasks on the grounds of the institution to include:
+ LINE WORK – Installing and maintaining transformers, power lines, guy wires, insulators, cross arms, poles, lighting arrestors, switches, and ground wires.
+ HOUSE WIRING – Installing and providing electrical service for receptacles, switches, light fixtures, multibreakers, fans, disconnect switches, air conditioners, electric ovens, washing machines, electric dryers, and various other household appliances.
+ INDUSTRIAL – Installing and providing electrical maintenance for such industrial and commercial equipment as elevators, various types and sizes of transformers and transformer banks, dishwashing and cooking equipment, water well and sewage lift pumps, multi-ton air conditioning and ice plant compressors, gasoline pumps, laundry equipment, electrical thermostats, and security lights.
Work with:
Adult male inmates of all custody levels – minimum, medium, maximum (death row) and protective custody.

+ Current permanent status classified LA State employees may be required to accept a probational appointment if accepted.
+ An employee selected for a promotion may be required to serve a trial detail prior to being permanently promoted.
+ This posting may also be used to fill a vacancy as a temporary job appointment. If filled as a temporary job appointment, should a permanent position become available, the employee may be converted to a probational appointment.
