The NYU Department of Environmental Studies invites applications for a postdoctoral associate to
contribute to a project on the future of nutrient pollution governance. The position is part of the Global
Nitrogen Innovation Center for Clean Energy and the Environment and will examine: (i) how to leverage
the opportunities - and manage the trade-offs - of green ammonia development; and (ii) how governance
interventions targeting actors and institutions across the global agri-food system can influence farm-level
nutrient management decisions.
The ideal candidate has training in, or a strong commitment to, interdisciplinary environmental research;
an interest in translating research into policy-relevant outputs; and the ability to present findings in both
academic and non-academic forums.
The initial appointment is for one year, with the possibility of renewal for a second year. The postdoctoral
associate will be based at NYU’s Washington Square campus in New York City and will have ample
opportunities to engage with our highly interdisciplinary faculty. The position will also offer direct
collaboration with the International Nitrogen Initiative (INI) and the International Nitrogen Network (iN-
Net), two leading efforts that convene researchers, policymakers, NGOs, companies, international
organizations, and foundations committed to sustainable nitrogen management.
We welcome applications from candidates with PhDs in environmental studies, environmental policy,
political science, agricultural/environmental economics, law, sociology, human geography, or related
fields. Candidates with natural science training who have pivoted or are looking to pivot toward
governance and policy dimensions of nutrient management are also encouraged to apply.
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is
$65,000-$70,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) specific grant funding
and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.
