    Mission Statement

Michigan Medicine improves the health of patients, populations and communities through excellence in education, patient care, community service, research and technology development, and through leadership activities in Michigan, nationally and internationally. Our mission is guided by our Strategic Principles and has three critical components; patient care, education and research that together enhance our contribution to society.

    Course Description

A central goal of modern neuroscience is to crack the "Neural Code", deciphering how the ongoing activity of large neural populations give rise to functions such as sensation, cognition and action. To do this, research labs use a wide array of electrophysiological, optical and other techniques to record brain activity in living animals and try to identify patterns in these data. As neurophysiological recordings often include thousands of samples per second from one to hundreds of recording channels while sensory stimuli and the subject's actions and behavioral state are simultaneously changing, gaining insight into such data requires advanced data analysis skills. The goal of this course is to provide students with the basic programming and computational skills required to analyze time-varying neural data using the MATLAB programming language. The course will start with a fast-paced introduction to programming using MATLAB and will then cover common analysis approaches in neuroscience research and their application on real datasets. Weekly homework and problem sets that include coding of analysis methods and application to datasets will reinforce concepts and methods.

    Responsibilities*

The GSI is expected to attend all lectures (~3 hours/week for the entire semester) and to hold up to 3 hours of weekly office hours or study/discussion sessions. The GSI will be responsible for grading homework and problem sets. Depending on needs, the GSI may be asked to prepare content for and present discussion sessions. The GSI will work with the course instructors on assessing student understanding and performance, contributing to creation of homework and problem set assignments, managing the course Canvas site, and overall course administration.

    Required Qualifications*

Proficiency in computer programming with experience in programming in Matlab. Familiarity with analysis methods for spike time and continuous time (EEG, LFP) neural data. Background in mathematical and statistical concepts applied in neural data analysis methods. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Previous research experience in neuroscience.

    Desired Qualifications*

Fluency in Matlab programming. Previous research experience analyzing neural recording data. Familiarity with advanced data analysis techniques such as principal component analysis and machine learning applied to neural datasets. Significant coursework and research experience in neuroscience.
