    Senior Director of Accounting

    Job Summary

    The Michigan Medicine Health System Senior Director of Accounting - Controller (SDA) is responsible for the statutory and management accounting functions for the clinical enterprises, which are the Academic Medical Center (AMC) in Ann Arbor and the hospitals and clinics of the Regional Health Network. The SDA manages the general ledger(s) of the clinical enterprises, ensuring the accuracy of book-keeping entries following appropriate standards (generally accepted accounting principles or GAAP, compliance with the Government Accounting Standards Board or GASB, and other industry standards where appropriate), and the adequacy of the charts of accounts. The SDA oversees the annual external audit of the clinical enterprises, ensuring the accuracy of financial reporting, the maintenance of internal controls, and the testing of accounts receivable and the revenue recognition model. Reporting to the Michigan Medicine Chief Financial Officer (MM CFO), the SDA serves as a member of the Finance executive management team.

    Responsibilities*

    Primary Roles and Responsibilities

    As the principal accounting executive manager of Michigan Medicine's clinical enterprises, the SDA performs the following responsibilities:

    + Overseeing book-keeping and general ledger processes, interfacing with the University of Michigan accounting functions related to the AMC, and directly supervising all accounting functions at the Regional Health Network.

    + Maintaining financial internal controls ensuring accounting entry accuracy, preventing waste, fraud, and abuse of financial resources, and establishing and running processes that meet external audit standards.

    + Generating routine financial statements following accounting standards (GAAP, GASB, or other where applicable), including income statements, balance sheets, statements of cash flows, trial balances, and other reports.

    + Managing the monthly financial close process in coordination with Health System senior finance management (Associate CFOs, Vice Presidents of Finance, Chief of Revenue Cycle, Chief of Contracting and Managed Care, Senior Director of Reimbursement, and others).

    + Serving as the primary accounting subject matter expert for the Health System, offering opinions and advice to the MM CFO and other senior executive leadership at Michigan Medicine and the University.

    + Leading initiatives that have significant impacts on the accounting process of the Health System (consolidating finance and accounting into a central corporate service, developing a central general ledger and chart of accounts, and serving as a team-member to design, test, build, and implement an Enterprise Resource Planning System).

    + Managing personnel through direct reporting relationships or through influence, ensuring best practices from the accounting staff and productive inter-company transactions with the University, and managing staff across multiple geographies and employers.

    + Supervising the annual external audit process through effective working relationships with audit firm partners and staff and in coordination with the University.

    + Serving as staff to the University of Michigan Health Board Finance and Audit Committee, the University of Michigan Health Corporation Board Finance and Audit Committee, and other governing bodies where appropriate or assigned.

    Other Responsibilities

    + Build strong, positive relationships with key administrative and clinical leaders throughout Michigan Medicine and the University, firmly establishing trust and credibility.

    + Ensure that Michigan Medicine's resources are deployed with integrity and aligned with the goals of the clinical and academic enterprises.

    + Act as a senior partner in the analysis and due diligence of existing business entities relative to restructuring, acquisitions, and/or divestitures to meet strategic objectives.

    + Ensure integrity of financial reporting systems and develop management reporting tools to enable leaders to make effective business decisions.

    + Build productive relationships and promote a collaborative work environment.

    + Recruit, select and manage a staff of direct and indirect reports by professional leadership, mentoring, counseling, reorganization, and other personnel management initiatives. Set job expectations and performance standards for team members which contribute to the overall success of Michigan Medicine. Coach and mentor direct reports and others to ensure individual and organizational effectiveness.

    Required Qualifications*

    Education

    The SDA is required to hold a Bachelor's degree in accounting, business or public administration, finance, health administration, public health, health economics, or related field from an accredited institution of higher education; and is required to have an active Certified Public Accounting (CPA) designation in the state of Michigan.

    Experience

    The SDA possesses:

    + A minimum of 10 years of successful, progressive experience leading an accounting and/or finance function within the health care industry (experience with academic health systems or affiliates preferred).

    + Experience with risk management in a complex, multi-hospital, and geographically dispersed clinical enterprise.

    + Exposure to scaling accounting processes and systems in response to hospital or health system acquisitions, partnerships, affiliations and joint ventures.

    + Experience with accounting for various reimbursement models (bundled payments, risk contracting, capitation).

    + A strong business orientation with the ability to "go beyond the numbers" in helping the senior executive team identify and develop opportunities for optimizing assets and strengthening the organization's financial performance.

    + An ability to be highly strategic, agile, and able to handle complex business and risk issues.

    + Solid expertise building a financial team that has its eye on the future and is responsive to its constituencies.

    + Strong executive presentation skills, including the ability to influence, negotiate and communicate effectively at all levels.

    + A collaborative leadership style through direct, open, and honest communications.

    + A history of success working with multiple constituencies and within layered governance structures.

     

    Modes of Work

     

    Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department.     Background Screening

     

    Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
