    Position Information

    We are seeking highly motivated Assistant Manager for Transportation to join our dynamic team to assist with the management and coordination of an assigned service unit within the department. Provides support to the Transportation Manager in overseeing the maintenance and operation of IHA’s vehicle fleet, which includes cars, SUVs, and RVs. These vehicles serve as Mobile Health Assessment Centers (MHACs) located across various Texas A&M campuses. Responsibilities include assisting with preventative and corrective maintenance to ensure the safety, reliability, and readiness of all vehicles. Supports the transportation of MHACs to research study visits, community outreach, and educational events throughout Texas. Serves as a reliable backup to the Manager, assuming managerial duties as needed.

    Responsibilities:

    Fleet Maintenance Oversight

    + Assists in managing the maintenance and operation of IHA’s vehicle fleet.

    + Maintains records for all fleet vehicles, including mileage, fuel usage, maintenance activities, incident reports, and inspection logs.

    + Coordinates and oversees scheduling of preventative maintenance, inspections, and servicing to ensure vehicle readiness and minimize downtime.

    + Liaises with external vendors and service providers for specialized repairs and services.

    + Conducts routine inspections of vehicle equipment to identify and address issues and damage; performs minor repairs and installations as needed.

    + Collaborate with IHA Operations to ensure compliance with registration, insurance, and all regulatory documentation for fleet vehicles.

    + Supports implementation of emergency protocols for vehicle-related incidents; available for emergency callouts and urgent maintenance needs.

    + Monitors vehicle performance, maintenance costs, and operational efficiency; reports issues and improvement opportunities to IHA Operations.

    + Ensure vehicles are always clean and presentable; performs general upkeep duties as needed.

    + Supports overall upkeep of fleet facilities, tools, and equipment; may perform general handy person or housekeeping tasks.

    Mobile Health Assessment Center (MHAC) Support

    + Conducts functional checks on MHAC systems, including generators and hydraulic lifts.

    + Maintains proper tire pressure and performs basic tire changes when needed.

    + Performs basic MHAC interior maintenance, including cleaning, replacing light bulbs or ceiling panels, and handling minor plumbing issues.

    + Maintains documentation for all MHAC-related supplies and safety equipment (e.g., fire extinguishers, AEDs, medical kits).

    + Conducts generator maintenance and monitors generator functionality at event locations.

    + Assist team with loading and unloading equipment in vehicles for travel.

    Transportation and Trip Planning

    + Manages logistics and scheduling for the transportation of fleet vehicles, including MHACs, between locations across the Texas A&M system (e.g., College Station, Fort Worth, Dallas).

    + Drives or supervises the transport of MHACs to research study visits, community events, and other scheduled deployments across the state.

    + Plans trip routes, ensuring clearance for MHAC height and identifying fuel and service stops as needed.

    + Coordinates with site contacts to arrange appropriate parking locations and access to electricity or other infrastructure.

    + Conducts pre-trip and post-trip inspections using established checklists to ensure operational readiness and safe usage of MHACs.

    + Operates waste management procedures, including transporting MHACs to dump sites for black/grey water disposal.

    Administrative and Supervisory Responsibilities

    + Contributes to the development and implementation of departmental goals, policies, and procedures in alignment with IHA Operations and MHAC leadership.

    + Supervises and schedules additional drivers; provides oversight of daily transit operations and long-term transportation planning.

    + Assists in the preparation and administration of the transportation and fleet maintenance budget; tracks and reports variances in coordination with IHA Operations.

    + Coordinates with Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) to implement and maintain driver training and fleet safety programs.

    + Maintains accident reports and supports risk management processes; investigates incidents and recommends process improvements.

    + Ensures compliance with university system, state, and federal transportation regulations.

    + Communicates policy updates and procedural changes to fleet drivers and vehicle coordinators; ensures accuracy of vehicle data and documentation.

    + Performs other duties as assigned.

    Required Qualifications:

    + Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    + Four years of related experience.

    + Valid vehicle operator’s license and good driving record.

    + Valid State of Texas class “B” vehicle operator’s license.

    + Knowledge of RVs and trailers and similar large mobile vehicles. Knowledge of maintenance of RV, cars, and SUVs.

    + Strong organizational skills for trip planning.

    + Ability to carry out verbal and written instructions.

    + Ability to maintain confidentiality of information (Ex- when working/interacting with research participants).

    + Ability to manage time effectively and efficiently. Ability to work effectively and deal tactfully with professional personnel and the public.

    + Ability to project a positive and professional image of IHA/AgriLife/TAMU. Excellent customer service skills.

    + Promote safety to ensure that staff in the unit follow safety policies and procedures.

    + Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.

    + Ability to stoop, bend, and lift heavy objects (up to 80 lbs).

    + Comfortable working on ladders and at heights.

    + Capable of performing manual labor in varying environmental conditions.

    + Sufficient dexterity to operate hand and power tools effectively.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + One year of work experience in management of fleet of a variety of standard and large vehicles including full size RV-type vehicles with specialty equipment.

    + Vocational training or certification in automotive or RV maintenance.

    + Medical training and experience (e.g., EMT, fire fighter, etc.).

    + Bilingual in English and Spanish.

    Other Requirements:

    + Ability to stoop, bend, and lift heavy objects (up to 80 lbs).

    + Comfortable working on ladders and at heights.

    + Capable of performing manual labor in varying environmental conditions.

    + Sufficient dexterity to operate hand and power tools effectively.

    + Ability to work flexible hours.

    + Ability to drive up to 8 hours one way.

    + Occasional overnight and/or weekend travel.
