Job** **Summary
This position reports to the Principal Investigator, Dr. Mohammed Imran Aslam, and provides assistance in support of research activities under close supervision. Dr. Aslam is a new clinician-investigator in the Molecular Cardiology Research Institute (MCRI). Broadly, the Aslam laboratory will focus on understanding molecular mechanisms of myocardial function in cardiac injury, including animal models of heart failure and cardiogenic shock. A specific technical expertise the lab is looking to establish is use of a myocyte rig to measure cardiac myocyte mechanics including contractility, tension, velocity and power of the sarcomere unit. Dr. Aslam has prior experience with this method, and will train the technician in this technique. Additionally, the technician will be expected to take part in performing general molecular biological methods including extraction of DNA, RNA, and proteins, RT-PCR, Western blotting, mitochondria isolation, seahorse assay (assessing mitochondrial function), histological assays including tissue collection/harvesting and staining, and basic use of computer programs for data analysis. Regarding these molecular techniques, the technician will be expected to perform such function with appropriate initial training, and to be able to demonstrate independence after a reasonable time period. While prior expertise in each of the above techniques is not required, the competitive applicant will have at least some basic bench lab experience.
