The Department of Emergency Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania seeks candidates for an Assistant Professor position in the non-tenure clinician educator track. Expertise is required in the specific area of Emergency Medicine. Applicants must have an M.D. degree. ABEM certified or board eligible.
Teaching responsibilities may include bedside teaching to medical students, residents, and fellows. Additional teaching responsibilities include lectures, journal clubs, case conferences, simulation teaching, small group discussions, and other formats. Dedication to teaching is highly valued in our department.
Clinical responsibilities may include providing emergency medical care to patients presented to the emergency department at HUP Spruce, Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, HUP Cedar, ED Observation Unit and Pennsylvania Hospital.
Research or scholarship responsibilities may include opportunities to work across departments and schools (there are 6 STEM schools on campus) on multidisciplinary projects. Independent research is a key component for success in this position and there is a mandatory promotion probationary period that requires evidence of significant scholarship. Candidates with post-residency research methodology training or fellowship training may have an advantage in meeting the requirements of this track. A reduced clinical schedule is initially available for this position with the expectation that after an introductory period, there will be independent funding to support the clinical reduction. Mentoring is provided and teamwork is encouraged and valued.
The Department of Emergency Medicine manages emergency services across any of the sites listed above with a combined annual emergency department census of 145,000 visits. Each site has a unique, diverse, highly acute patient population consisting of local and referral patients. Additionally, the Department collaborates with the Emergency Departments at Lancaster General Hospital, Chester County Hospital, and Princeton Medical Center.
Emergency Medicine has a 4 year, highly successful, academically oriented residency program with 56 residents, multiple fellowships, and several nationally acclaimed research programs. There are over 120 faculty across the academic sites and there are close academic affiliations and programmatic alliances with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The Department has active collaborations with other University of Pennsylvania Centers and schools such as the Penn Medicine Center for Healthcare Innovation, Wharton Business School, Leonard Davis Institute for Health Care Economics, and the Center for Clinical Epidemiology, and Biostatistics, among others.
