We’re looking for a Product Designer II to join the Windows & Devices Design & Research team and help reimagine the future of Windows and our device portfolio.
At Windows Design, we shape the core operating system: the canvas where billions work, play, and create. At Devices Design, we bring software to life through hardware—Surface, Xbox, peripherals, and new form factors that blend digital and physical. Together, we explore how AI-first, multimodal interactions can redefine what’s possible across software, hardware, and future workflows.
You’ll join a startup-style creative lab inside Windows Design: curious, ambitious, and maker-first. We explore emerging technologies early, spot trends, and turn them into opportunities and user scenarios. Our work ranges from adding subtle magic to today’s products to building entirely new ones that anticipate where the industry is heading. We thrive in 0–1, where ambiguity fuels invention.
Within this lab, we’re looking for full-stack makers—designers who combine craft, code, and curiosity to explore new possibilities and bring ideas to life.
How We Define a** **Full-Stack Maker:
We’re looking for **full-stack makers** —designers who think end to end and love turning ideas into tangible experiences. You’re part designer, part technologist, part storyteller. You ask “What if?” and then make it real. You’re as comfortable shaping an interaction in Figma as you are prototyping it in code or exploring how AI can transform a workflow.
Full-stack makers blend design fundamentals, technical fluency, and creative experimentation. You bridge the gap between concept and prototype, helping teams imagine the future by building it.
We look for these core qualities:
+ **Design excellence:** Strong visual, interaction/HCI, and systems design grounded in accessibility and craft.
+ **Technical fluency:** Hands-on building and prototyping with the flexibility to adapt and invent.
+ **AI curiosity:** Interest in how emerging AI capabilities—LLMs, agents, and multimodal systems—can reshape workflows and interfaces.
+ **Storytelling:** Ability to make ideas tangible and inspire through narrative, prototypes, and demos.
+ **Strategic insight:** Balancing vision and feasibility across business, user, and technical contexts.
+ **Collaboration:** Fluent in the languages of design, engineering, PM, and research, helping move ideas forward together.
Responsibilities
+ Design core experiences – craft visual, interaction, and product patterns that are polished, inclusive, and forward-looking, setting a strong foundation for user experience.
+ Prototype in code – bring concepts to life through interactive demos (web, Windows, XR) that showcase new interaction patterns, AI-enabled capabilities, and 0–1 scenarios.
+ AI as a new material – conduct open-ended research into the latest advances in AI; run rapid experiments with LLMs, AI Agents, Model Context Protocol (MCP), Computer User Agents (CUA), and related foundational AI technologies; and distill learnings into well-documented insights for the team and articulated opportunities for product augmentation.
+ Tell stories – script, storyboard, and produce short-form videos, demos, or internal marketing videos that make vision and behavior clear to both technical and nontechnical audiences, inspiring and energizing partners.
+ Validate and influence – test and iterate concepts with UX Research, partners, and stakeholders; share insights that shape product roadmaps.
+ Champion prototyping & collaboration – drive rapid prototyping, user testing, and cross-functional collaboration to accelerate learning.
+ Collaborate to ship – work with Design, PM, Engineering, and Research to deliver end-to-end design and evolve prototypes into production using both existing and emerging technologies.
+ Build what doesn’t exist – create small tools, scripts, or workflows that upskill the team, accelerate the design process, and expand what’s possible.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
+ Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, User Experience, Interaction Design, or related field AND 3+ years experience working in product or service design
+ OR equivalent experience (e.g., demonstrated experience working in product or service design or using design thinking to solve problems).
+ 3+ years’ experience using Figma and Adobe Creative Cloud, with a portfolio of high-quality artifacts that demonstrate end-to-end design process experience, including shipping products or delivering services.
+ 2+ years’ experience building with HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Python; familiarity with React
+ 1+ years’ experience applying generative AI (including LLMs and agent-based systems) to real products or prototypes, with knowledge of patterns, constraints, evaluation methods, and integration into user experiences.
Other Requirements** **:
+ **Online portfolio showcasing your work across design, development, storytelling, and emerging tech, plus code samples with links to your GitHub or CodePen that demonstrate your development work.**
**Preferred Qualifications** :
+ Master's Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, User Experience, Interaction Design, or related field AND 3+ years experience working in product or service design
+ OR Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, User Experience, Interaction Design, or related field AND 5+ years experience working in product or service design
+ OR equivalent experience (e.g., demonstrated experience working in product or service design or using design thinking to solve problems).
+ Collaboration – strong collaboration skills with demonstrated ability to work across disciplines (Design, PM, Engineering, Research).
+ Storytelling & narrative – ability to shape concepts into narratives, storyboard interactions, and produce/edit videos (Premiere, After Effects, DaVinci Resolve, or similar).
+ 2D/3Dmotion – background in motion design, and animation
+ Tooling mindset – experience building scripts, plugins, or tools that extend workflows and accelerate prototyping.
+ Physical prototyping – exposure to hardware or IoT prototyping (sensors, microcontrollers, interactive devices) and blending physical-digital experiences.
+ Startup experience – experience working in a fast-paced, 0–1 startup or incubation environment.
+ Innovation leadership – experience framing new opportunity spaces, shaping strategy, or influencing product roadmaps through early explorations.
