+ Incorporate innovation in design and delivery.

Examples of some of the recently designed projects that our Western Pennsylvania Area structures group include, but may not be limited to, the following:

McKeesport-Duquesne Bridge Preservation, PennDOT District 11, Allegheny County, PA

A bridge preservation of a 9-span bridge including girder-floorbeam-stringer span and through-truss spans. Preservation activities include multiple steel repair and bearing to truss connection retrofits, attachment of new bridge mounted sign structures, conceptual temporary joints and conceptual jacking scheme design, expansion joint replacement and beam seat, backwall and approach slab reconstruction, deck modifications including an ADA curb ramp, fence replacement, concrete repairs, and downspout replacement. Construction is anticipated to start in 2026.

SR3007 and SR201 over I-70, PennDOT District 12, Westmoreland County, PA

This project included the replacement of a three-span bridge carrying two lanes of SR 3007 over I-70 and the bridge preservation of a three-span through-girder bridge carrying SR 201 over I-70. The SR 3007 replacement structure is a single-span bridge utilizing prestressed bulb-tee beams, supported by full-height abutments. The abutment locations were strategically designed to accommodate future widening of I-70 and the beam depths were optimized to provide sufficient vertical clearance and minimize SR3007 profile adjustments. The SR 201 bridge preservation incorporated a new bearing and steel bolster system designed to increase the vertical clearance over I-70. Additional work included rebuild of abutment backwall, deck blockout, barrier and precast concrete approach slabs to accommodate the vertical profile shift. Construction was completed in 2023.

    Ongoing projects:

Our structures group is currently working on multiple major bridge and bridge corridor replacement projects across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, including:

SR 0070 Section K30, I-70 Corridor Improvements, Washington County, PA.

Currently in preliminary engineering, this project includes safety improvements and total reconstruction of a 6.5-mile corridor of rural interstate. The project involves the replacement of ten mainline bridges and the rehabilitation or potential replacements of two overhead bridges, an additional two mainline bridges, and three culverts. The use of temporary bridges for maintenance of traffic during construction is being explored. Construction is anticipated to start in 2030.

SR 0080 Brookville West, Jefferson County, PennDOT District 10-0

This is an interstate reconstruction project with the objective of widening Interstate 80 (I-81) near Brookville, PA. The project includes the replacement of three structures. Two structures span over I-80 and are proposed as two-span steel girder bridges with integral abutments and a wall pier. Once structure is a box culvert carrying Campbell Run under I-80. The project is currently in preliminary design.

SR 0081 D46 Total Reconstruction, Lackawanna County, PennDOT District 4-0

This project involves the total reconstruction of approximately 4 miles of Interstate 81 (I-81) in Scranton, PA. The project includes the reconfiguration of two interchanges and widening of the highway to accommodate six lanes of traffic. The project involves the replacement of twenty-four bridges, the addition of twenty retaining walls, multiple sign structures and several sound barriers. Several structures involve the use of curved steel I-girders and the project includes a twenty-plus span steel viaduct structure carrying I-81 Northbound. The project is currently in design and is anticipated to be let in a single contract in 2027.
