    DESCRIPTION

    Job Summary:

    Utilizes advanced skills, knowledge, and experiences for leading projects or activities and performing analyses using Materials Engineering tools and standard instruments and test equipment, while positively impacting the organization's performance.

     

    Applies advanced skills and experiences while preparing samples and specimens, operating analytical instruments and equipment, performing physical analyses, acquiring and interpreting data, and documenting technical results in support of production and non-production engineering, quality, and manufacturing groups.

     

    Effectively utilizes advanced skills and experiences to solve complex problems; compiles, analyzes, and reports performance or progress information to management.

     

    Develops and documents all laboratory methods.

     

    Performs routine calibrations, maintenance, troubleshooting, and minor repair of instruments and equipment.

     

    Coordinates the collection, transportation, and documentation of chemical waste disposal.

     

    Understands and applies appropriate company and department rules and guidelines to work.

     

    Actively mentors and trains apprentices, trainees, and technicians; manages training needs within the laboratory.

     

    Interfaces with customers, suppliers, engineers, and other functions.

     

    Coordinates programs including planning, scheduling, ordering, and tracking; handles projects that require significant decisions to be made to work flow and priorities; provides effective technical and project leadership.

     

    Exercises independent decision-making and initiative for needed activities, problem solving, creative technical and analytical work, and hands-on applications.

     

    Participates in the maintenance of quality procedures and work instructions.

     

    Participates in improvement projects; demonstrates adaptability and responsiveness to changing work needs and willingness to undertake new tasks.

     

    Develops and gives presentations to engineers, customers, and suppliers.

     

    Participates in self and team audits and associated corrective actions.

     

    Performs other miscellaneous duties, as required.

    Operates analytical equipment and performs physical analysis in support of production and non-production engineering groups; equipment may include any of the following: gas chromatograph, ion chromatograph, inductively coupled plasma spectrometer, thermal gravimetric analyzer, differential scanning calorimeter, mass spectrometer, x-ray spectrometer, ultra sound analyzers, optical imaging equipment, tensile/compression testers, hardness testers, gas flow reactors, spark emission spectrometer, viscometer, rheometer, eddy current flow tester, dye penetrant flow tester, magnetic particle flaw tester, Fourier Transform Infrared spectrometer and metallographic equipment.

     

    Prepares samples and specimens for testing using standard laboratory techniques.

     

    Acquires and interprets data and documents results; provides written results in technical report format when appropriate.

     

    Documents laboratory methods.

     

    Performs routine calibration maintenance troubleshooting and minor repair of instrumentation and equipment. Coordinates the collection, transportation, and documentation of chemical waste disposal.

     

    Understands and applies appropriate company and department rules and guidelines to work.

     

    Works with and trains apprentices and technicians.

     

    Interfaces with customers, suppliers, engineers, and other functions.

     

    Coordinates programs including planning, scheduling, ordering, and tracking.

     

    Participates in the maintenance of quality procedures.

     

    Leads and participate in improvement projects.

     

    Develops and gives presentations to customers and suppliers.

     

    Knows and complies with all safety policies and procedures.

     

    Demonstrates confidentiality as required.

     

    Participates in self- and team-audits and associated corrective action.

     

    Performs other miscellaneous duties, as required, to get the job done.

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Competencies:

    Data Acquisition - Prepares samples, verifies equipment calibration and performs tests according to an approved standard procedure or work instruction in a manner which ensures, and results in, data that can be trusted and delivered to the engineer or customer.

     

    Data Reporting - Prepares documentation in a manner which clearly organizes and presents testing methods, instrument settings, the data and analysis to allow the engineer and customer to understand the results and form accurate conclusions and recommendations.

     

    Material Characterization - Interprets mechanical, chemical, microstructural and physical properties using laboratory equipment to confirm compliance to print, and correlates these properties with field or component test results to determine robustness; defines appropriate material characterization schedule using correct laboratory equipment to ensure requirements are met.

     

    Collaborates - Building partnerships and working collaboratively with others to meet shared objectives.

     

    Communicates effectively - Developing and delivering multi-mode communications that convey a clear understanding of the unique needs of different audiences.

     

    Customer focus - Building strong customer relationships and delivering customer-centric solutions.

    Education, Licenses, Certifications:

    High school diploma, certificate of completion of secondary education or equivalent experience in an appropriate STEM field is required.

     

    Regionally applicable certification or two year Associates Degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant field of study may be required.

     

    This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

     

    High school diploma, GED or equivalent required with Department of Labor Certification OR Associates degree from an accredited program in a related field and at least two years of relevant experience OR Bachelors degree in a related field. Must pass all related testing.

    Experience:

    Requires significant relevant work experience or specialized skills obtained through education, training or on-the-job experience.

     

    Department of Labor Certification OR four year experience/education requirement accomplished through either Bachelors degree in related field OR associates degree in related field and at least two years of relevant experience

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Qualifications

    This position is in the Battery Cell Technology Lab at the Cummins Technical Center (CTC).

    Key responsibilities include:

    + Preparing for a test:

    + Assembling and routing cables for testing.

    + Recording initial measurements and assembling cells in test fixtures.

    + Running the test:

    + Control the cycler.

    + Work with a lab engineer to diagnose equipment failures.

    + Safety and Regulations:

    + Abide by: Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO), Fall from heights, Hoist and Crane, and other site safety policies.

    + Store, ship, and dispose of cells according to lab policies as well as national and international regulation.

    + Cell Research and Forensics:

    + Work with lab engineers to prepare electrodes for small cell assembly.

    + Assemble small cells for research testing.

    + Perform cell teardowns for either competitive benchmarking or as part of field-return analysis.
