The Chemist is a member of the Tech Services Department reporting directly to the Laboratory Manager. The Chemist will be a leader and champion of quality data, good communications, safety, value addition, and continuous improvement within the Lab. Chemists must demonstrate leadership with regards to supporting Technicians, Area Teams, and the success of the Lab as a whole. Successful candidates must possess strong leadership, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
RESPONSIBILITIES:1. Conducts comprehensive chemical analysis of water, petroleum, gasoline, solvents and other compounds to identify elements or determine quantities contained by the use of standard tests and procedures.2. Records the results obtained through analysis; assembles and summarizes data in report form for management’s use.3. Recommends procedures to eliminate, solve or correct unfavorable conditions found as a results of analysis.4. Verifies tests prepared by testers that appear to be questionable by observing the procedure used and if procedures are correctly applied, checks the equipment and chemical solutions used to determine the reason for the test being questionable.5. Directs the activities of less experienced chemists, when assigned to special projects and trains them in conducting involved chemical analysis tests.6. Keeps abreast of the latest developments and changes in testing methods, equipment and techniques used in the chemical field.7. Becomes acquainted with the latest type of machines handling electronic type analysis, operates such machines and trains others in their operation, takes care of the maintenance and outlines special techniques to be used for their operation.8. Develop Lab Technicians to take on responsibilities listed in Item 7.9. May fill in for Laboratory Foreman or Laboratory Supervisor during vacation and other absences.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s Degree with 16 hours of college-level chemistry required. Chemistry Degree preferred.
