Description
The Norfolk Police Department is committed to representing one of the most diverse cities in the region. Develop and coordinate fitness and wellness programs or services. Instructs health and fitness related classes to Norfolk police personnel. Utilizes fitness testing equipment to determine employee’s vital signs, body composition, cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, etc. Interacts with individuals by coordinating activities among department chiefs, medical doctors, wellness coordinators, and others. Will facilitate the completion, tracking and processing of recruit injury packets. Tracks and coordinates with City medical provider, the scheduling of annual fitness tests for all sworn personnel, fit for duty appointments post injury and verification of fit for duty for personnel transfers.
Essential Functions
*The departmental hiring salary range for this position is $42,629-$49,023 annually*
Essential functions include, but are not limited to:
+ Evaluates each employee’s level of fitness by taking vital signs, using fitness testing equipment to measure body composition, cardiovascular fitness, strength, endurance, flexibility and coordinating annual physicals with the medical provider.
+ Counsels employees on fitness by evaluating risk factors for cardiovascular disease, scoring and comparing each employee’s fitness level against population norms, creating individual exercise programs, and teaching classes about nutrition, strength and cardiovascular training.
+ Performs administrative duties by creating individual files for employees, inputting data into databases, maintaining physician clearance forms, and performing statistical analysis on data.
+ Interacts with individuals by coordinating activities among the department chiefs, medical doctors, wellness coordinator, and others as well as acting chair on the Fire and Paramedical Wellness Team.
Education/Experience
Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
One (1) year experience in health, fitness, and wellness.

Work Schedule:
40-hours a week, Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (with a 30-minute lunch break).
+ Regular full-time and permanent part-time employees may receive paid holidays, vacation and sick leave, employer paid pension plan, basic life insurance, voluntary participation in medical and dental, Section 457 deferred compensation, long-term disability, optional life insurance for self, spouse and children, medical and dependent care reimbursement plans, access to membership in credit union and employer provided parking.

+ Retirement
If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
+ The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
