    Job Summary

    The chaplainworks independently and cooperatively to provide spiritual, religious, and emotional support and resources for a varied population of patients, families, and staff through spiritual assessments/interventions, in accordance with hospital and departmental mission, values, and guidelines. The chaplainwill provide services that are patient-centered, respectful, and compatible with developmental age and religious/cultural health beliefs and practices.

    Responsibilities*

    + Assess patient and family emotional, spiritual and/or religious needs, support with appropriate interventions, and assess outcomes in line with departmental policies and processes

    + As a member of the interdisciplinary team, act as a patient advocate to staff, representing or interpreting the patients' religious/spiritual views, values and wishes.

    + Providespiritual supportto staff regarding their own spiritual health and struggles, especially in ethically and morally complex situations, including 1:1 engagement and facilitation of group debriefs

    + Serve as a liaison to community religious leaders

    + Present didactics and other education on spiritual care topics both in the department and to other departments/teams

    + Participate in hospital wide committees, programs, and events as assigned

    + Participate in professional development for continual assessment and improvement of clinical practice in alignment with the field of professional healthcare chaplaincy

    + Utilize a lens of equity to promote excellent clinical care

    + Adhere to the code of ethics of the Association of Professional Chaplains and department and health system wide policies and processes

    + Demonstrate and integrate BCCi competencies in clinical setting

    Required Qualifications*

    + A Master of Divinity or equivalent graduate degree from a Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) accredited institution that includes theological, spiritual, and/or religious studies

    + Minimum of 4 units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE)

    + Experience working as a chaplain in a pediatric unit

    Desired Qualifications*

    + Strong preference given to candidates with training in pediatric chaplaincy (ie Pediatric Chaplains Institute, pediatric residency, etc)

    + Excellent cultural, multi-faith, and developmental humility and awareness

    + Skilled in developing rapport and effectively communicating with a diverse patient population.

    + Effective organizational skills, flexibility, self-motivation, and the ability to effectively prioritize multiple competing tasks in a dynamic medical clinic

    + Effective collaboration with a large multi-disciplinary team

    + Skilled in interpersonal and group dynamics with an ability to offer appropriate recommendations and interventions particularly around communication and conflict

    + Proficiency in keeping accurate and timely electronic clinical records by computer

     

    Work Schedule

     

    This is a .5 FTE permanent position. Some nights and weekends may be required.

    Background Screening

     

    Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings. Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
