The Connecticut Department of Correction (https://portal.ct.gov/DOC) (DOC) Unified School District #1 is seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Small Engine Repair Instructor (https://www.jobapscloud.com/CT/specs/classspecdisplay.asp?ClassNumber=2515T4&R1=&R3=) to teach the basic principles of small engine repair including safety, tools and measuring instruments, the fundamentals of electricity and electronics and ignition and lubrication systems, to name a few. This course carefully details the many systems, tools, and parts involved in the successful repair of small engines, covering performance measurement and preventative maintenance. This position is located at Robinson Correctional Institution (https://portal.ct.gov/doc/facility/robinson-ci) in Enfield, CT. POSITION HIGHLIGHTS This is a full-time, 35 hour per week position. Schedule is on first shift, with a Monday-Friday schedule. The Unified School District (USD) #1 follows a 12-month school calendar. *Salary Note: Candidates new to the State of Connecticut will start on ‘Step one’ of the pay plan, in the tier that their highest level of education corresponds to. Salary details derived from the P-3B T1-T4 35 Hour Pay Plan are outlined below:
+ B.A. Degree $68,792
+ M.A. Degree $74,241
+ Sixth Year $77,294
The Connecticut Department of Correction Unified School District #1 is dedicated to providing quality educational programs for incarcerated individuals. Academic knowledge, vocational competencies and life skills integrated with technology are offered to students in a positive environment to foster lifelong learning, multicultural awareness and a successful transition to society. As a Vocational Instructor with the DOC, you will be responsible for:
+ Prioritizing safety and security as it pertains to staff, victims, citizens, and offenders;
+ Teaching early intervention, elementary, secondary, special subject, and/or special education curricula;
+ Developing educational plans for individuals and groups;
+ Setting short and long term goals and evaluating student progress;
+ Participating in planning team meetings and case review conferences to assess student behavior;
+ Holding conferences with parents or officials concerned with student performance;
+ Relating to professionals in ancillary educational roles;
+ Maintaining student records and writing reports; and
+ Modeling positive teaching practices.
We are seeking a candidate who possesses:
+ An understanding of the different types of learning styles of students and being able to teach to their ability levels.
+ The ability to work with a variety of different disciplines throughout the day.
+ Working knowledge of classroom routines and disciplines.
+ Outstanding personal and interpersonal skills.
+ The ability to follow the class schedule as provided by the school administration with the understanding that it may change unexpectedly.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a Department of Correction School District vocational education section and the Department of Children and Families this class provides instruction and supervision in vocational and occupational subjects to a group of inmates and/or residents.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
+ Plans and conducts a vocational program in accordance with curriculum established for vocational education developed under guidelines established by the State Department of Education-Division of Vocational Education;
+ Conducts classes and shop sessions in vocational and occupational subjects;
+ Corrects papers and tests;
+ Counsels inmates and/or students and gives individual instruction;
+ Maintains tools and equipment;
+ Attends staff and other professional meetings;
+ Prepares reports on inmates and/or students as required;
+ Performs all the security functions necessary to maintain safety of inmates and/or students, associates and other members of the institution populations;
+ Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
+ Knowledge of educational principles, methods and techniques;
+ Skill in a particular trade or occupation;
+ Ability to
+ work effectively with inmates and/or students;
+ express ideas simply and clearly, orally and in writing;
+ teach.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
High School graduation or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and eight (8) years of employment and/or teaching experience in the subject field.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE
Incumbents in this class must meet the State Board of Education requirements to receive initial educator certificate to teach Vocational Education.
NOTE: Payment for employees on the extended schedule will be determined by the appropriate contract.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
+ Experience with teaching a diverse group of people;
+ Experience working in a Correctional Institution setting;
+ Knowledge and experience in training operation and maintenance of small engines including lawn equipment, snow equipment, and personal watercrafts;
+ Knowledge and experience in training Small Engine Construction and Principles of Operation;
+ Knowledge and experience in training Small Engine Fuel and Emission Control Systems;
+ Knowledge and experience training Small Engine Preventative Maintenance and Troubleshooting.
