Steel Dynamics’ compensation model is intentionally designed to reward performance, foster teamwork, and build long-term wealth for our employees. Teammates are compensated through four elements: base pay, quarterly ROA bonus, annual profit sharing, and restricted stock units (RSUs), which together create an outstanding all-in package. For this role, the base wage is $65,000, with potential to increase based on experience. In addition to base pay, employees are eligible for a quarterly Return on Assets (ROA) bonus of up to 40%, which directly ties compensation to productivity, cost control, and efficient use of assets.
The profit-sharing program, awarded each March, amplifies this reward structure by sharing 8% of SDI’s pre-tax earnings among employees. This award is calculated as a percentage of each employee’s base wage plus ROA bonus, meaning teammates benefit twice from their quarterly performance. Profit sharing is split between 20% cash and 80% 401(k), allowing teammates to both enjoy immediate rewards and build long-term retirement value. At SDI, profit sharing is not a thank-you, it is a tangible return on the value teammates create for the company.
Employees also earn Restricted Stock Units (RSUs) annually, which vest over two years and are awarded each November. Once vested, employees can retain the stock as a long-term investment or sell it as a cash equivalent, giving them ownership in the company’s success. These stock awards, combined with SDI’s up to 50% 401(k) match, comprehensive health coverage through Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, company-paid life and disability insurance, and well-being and tuition reimbursement programs, make the total rewards package one of the most robust in the industry.
Altogether, this compensation approach allows SDI teammates to see a direct connection between their efforts, the company’s success, and their personal financial growth, making SDI’s structure not only competitive but deeply rewarding and performance-driven.
