The Department has elected to consider a range of experience for this vacancy. A candidate's' qualifications will determine the level at which they are hired.
Fleet Technician I (Entry-Level): This position performs skilled maintenance and repair of automotive, heavy, and light construction equipment, with a focus on routine service, minor repairs, and developing proficiency in more complex diagnostics. The ideal candidate has strong foundational skills and demonstrates the ability to learn and a desire to advance within the automotive field under general supervision.
Fleet Technician II (Journey-Level): This position performs advanced mechanical repairs and overhauls on a wide range of vehicles and equipment, including complex diagnostic and repair work. Technicians at this level work independently and may provide guidance to less experienced staff. The ideal candidate is able to exercise journey-level independence and advanced technical knowledge in the automotive field, under limited supervision.
Fleet Technician Master (Advanced-Level): This senior-level position performs expert diagnostics, major repairs, and overhauls on the most complex fleet and heavy equipment systems. The Master Technician also serves as a mentor and technical resource, providing training and guidance to other technicians. The ideal candidate is able to perform expert-level diagnostics, possesses leadership qualities, and utilizes specialized knowledge under minimal supervision.
Fleet Technician I (Entry-Level): Pay Range as of 2025: $27.032 – $37.845
Fleet Technician II (Journey-Level): Pay Range as of 2025: $28.654 – $40.116
Fleet Technician Master (Advanced-Level): Pay Range as of 2025: $32.196 – $45.074
Examples of Duties for Success
Fleet Technician I (Entry-Level):
+ Inspect, diagnose, and repair county vehicles and equipment.
+ Perform maintenance and repairs on engines, transmissions, differentials, clutches, electrical systems, hydraulics, air systems, chassis, steering assemblies, and drive train components.
+ Service air conditioning and fuel injection systems; repair and replace electrical and brake components.
+ Repair tires, alignments, and snow removal equipment; install public safety equipment.
+ Weld, fabricate, and assemble parts; perform minor body and chassis repair.
+ Conduct preventive maintenance, safety, and emissions inspections.
+ Maintain shop equipment, work records, and safe work practices.
+ Assist with staff training and support other technicians as needed.
+ Respond to service calls and snow emergencies.
Fleet Technician II (Journey-Level):
+ Perform all Technician I duties with greater independence and technical skill.
+ Overhaul and repair gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, and other complex drive train components.
+ Diagnose and repair advanced electrical, hydraulic, and brake systems, including electronic and computerized controls.
+ Fabricate and modify parts to improve equipment performance.
+ Lead preventive maintenance, safety, and emissions inspections.
+ Provide guidance to less experienced staff and assist with training.
+ Respond to service calls and scheduled snow operations.
Fleet Technician Master (Advanced-Level):
+ Perform all Technician II duties at an expert level, including major overhauls of engines and drivetrain components.
+ Diagnose and repair the most complex mechanical, electrical, and computerized systems.
+ Fabricate, modify, and repair body and chassis components.
+ Conduct advanced diagnostics and repairs to after-treatment and emission systems.
+ Provide technical direction, mentorship, and functional guidance to peers.
+ Assist with purchasing parts and materials; ensure accurate records in automated systems.
+ Lead shop safety practices, staff training, and specialized repairs.
+ Respond to service calls and snow emergencies as required.
Qualifications for Success
Fleet Technician I (Entry-Level):
+ Basic knowledge of automotive, light, and heavy equipment operations and repair.
+ Ability to use tools, diagnostic equipment, and repair procedures for gas and diesel vehicles.
+ Understanding of preventive maintenance practices and safety procedures.
+ Familiarity with hydraulic, air, and electrical systems, with the ability to learn advanced diagnosis and repair.
+ Ability to perform welding and fabrication.
+ Competence in reading manuals, blueprints, and schematics; following oral and written instructions.
+ Ability to maintain records in automated fleet systems and use County-supported software.
+ Strong communication skills and ability to build positive working relationships.
+ Ability to work independently, respond to service calls/snow operations.
+ Technical training in automotive or heavy equipment preferred.
Fleet Technician II (Journey-Level):
+ Proficient in diagnosis, troubleshooting, and repair of gas and diesel engines, drivetrains, and complex mechanical systems.
+ Advanced knowledge of preventive maintenance, hydraulics, high-pressure air/water systems, and electronic/electrical systems.
+ Skilled in welding, fabrication, and modification of parts and equipment.
+ Ability to accurately estimate repair needs, costs, and time.
+ Thorough understanding of applicable laws, codes, and safety practices.
+ Ability to operate heavy equipment and vehicles safely.
+ Strong recordkeeping skills using automated fleet management systems.
+ Effective communication and teamwork; ability to provide guidance to less experienced staff.
+ Ability to work independently, respond to service calls, and participate in scheduled snow operations.
Fleet Technician Master (Advanced-Level):
+ Expert knowledge of advanced diagnostics and major overhauls for engines, drivetrains, hydraulics, and computerized systems.
+ Specialized expertise in heavy equipment systems (tracks, rollers, conveyors, air brake systems, after-treatment/emission systems).
+ Mastery of welding, fabrication, and complex body/chassis repair.
+ Ability to lead diagnostics, assign work priorities, and mentor other technicians.
+ Proficient in purchasing parts/materials and ensuring accurate documentation in automated systems.
+ Deep understanding of safety regulations and ability to model best practices.
+ Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills with the ability to provide technical direction to peers.
+ Availability to respond to service calls and snow emergencies as required.
More Qualifications for Success
Fleet Technician I:
Experience
+ Two (2) years of journey-level experience performing minor and major repairs to vehicles or equipment.
+ Automotive and/or heavy equipment experience desired.
Education and Training:
+ High school diploma or GED equivalent.
+ Graduate from automotive or heavy equipment technical training preferred.
License and/or certification:
+ Must have a valid Colorado Driver’s License with no restrictions
+ Possession of, or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire, a valid Colorado commercial driver's license, class "B".
+ Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a diesel emissions license may also be required.
+ Obtain and maintain one (1) required ASE certification within one year of employment.
Fleet Technician II:
Experience:
+ Three (3) years of journey-level experience performing minor and major repairs to vehicles and equipment.
+ Automotive and/or heavy equipment experience desired.
Education and Training:
+ High school diploma or GED equivalent.
+ Graduate from automotive or heavy equipment technical training preferred.
License or Certificate:
+ Must have a valid Colorado Driver’s License with no restrictions

Fleet Technician Master:
Experience:
+ Eight (8) years of journey-level experience performing minor and major repairs to vehicles and equipment.
OR
+ Five (5) years of journey-level experience performing minor and major repairs to vehicles and equipment and graduation from an automotive or heavy equipment technical training program.
Education & Training:
+ High school diploma or GED equivalent.
+ Graduate from automotive or heavy equipment technical training is preferred and may substitute three (3) years required experience.
License and/or Certification:
+ Must have valid Colorado Driver’s License with no restrictions.
+ Possession of, or the ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire, a valid Colorado commercial driver's license, class "B".
+ Possession of, or the ability to obtain, a diesel emissions license required within one (1) year of hire.
+ Obtaining or possessing ASE Master Certification in either Automotive or Medium and Heavy Truck is required within eighteen (18) months of hire.Only one Master certification is required.

All Levels:
Background Check:Must pass a criminal background check.
Special Equipment: Fleet Technicians must provide their own tools required to perform automotive repair and maintenance.
Other:
+ Adams County is required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations to conduct pre-employment drug screens, background checks and motor vehicle record checks.
+ A successful candidate must pass all of the above, including a DOT physical and criminal background check.
+ Operate automobiles and heavy equipment safely. Must implement safe driving principles and practices.
Physical Requirements: All levels require a moderate level of physical endurance including the ability to:
+ Stand for extended periods of time
+ Ability to lift up to 75 pounds unassisted
+ Ability to push and/or pull heavy objects in excess of 100 pounds with assistance
+ Ability to: bend, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach overhead, twist, crawl
+ Ability to climb using a step stool or ladder to perform some job duties
+ May need to work in confined areas
