The Opportunity:
Reporting to the Sr Manager, Project Engineering, the Sr Engineer, Project Engineering manages and completes numerous projects that span multiple engineering disciplines. This position manages and supports the implementation of capital projects within the mill as well as supporting the mill reliability and improvement efforts. The position requires strong project management and technical skills to coordinate different disciplines within the Engineering department, Operations, Maintenance, consulting engineers, and vendors. Primarily, the prospective candidate should have the ability to manage several projects that span multiple engineering disciplines. We will consider candidates with a minimum of 2 years in paper or similar industry and will provide development to prepare the candidate to move into roles of greater responsibility within the Engineering department. This position is located onsite at the Evadale, TX paper mill.
How you will impact Smurfit Westrock:
* Oversee end-to-end execution of capital and expense repair projects, from initial concept through equipment installation and operational launch.
* Key responsibilities include crafting comprehensive project plans that integrate safety protocols, environmental considerations, scope definition, budget control, on-site implementation, and post-installation performance evaluation.
* Provide engineering expertise to Operations and Maintenance departments to help resolve various operating problems
* The ability to lead project teams, provide guidance, assign tasks, and effectively communicate with management, clients, and contractors.
* Manage the direction of consultants, contractors, and maintenance work associated with assigned capital and repair projects.
* Responsible for conducting business with integrity and respect, being accountable, and actively pursuing excellence to help achieve Smurfit Westrock\u2019s goals and objectives.
What you need to succeed:
* Preferred candidate will have a bachelor\u2019s degree in an engineering discipline, preferably Electrical, Civil, or Industrial, though degrees in construction management or a related technical field may also be considered, with certification as a Project Management Professional.
* Preferred candidate will have 5+ years related experience with emphasis on engineering of capital projects but will consider a candidate with a minimum of 2 years professional experience that has a strong technical aptitude and ability to develop and lead cross-functional teams.
* Strong oral and written communication, leadership, negotiation, and team motivation skills are essential for interacting with stakeholders and leading project teams effectively.
* Interpersonal skills such as building close working relationships and conflict resolution.
* Prior hands-on field experience, like that of a team leader, provides valuable practical knowledge for managing material and coordinating suppliers.
* A deep understanding of engineering principles, including areas like Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, operations research, and process optimization, is key.
* Adaptability to rapidly changing working environments and operational situations.
* Physical ability to operate in paper mill environment, including light to moderate lifting, walking, and climbing, oral communication, correctable vision, and ability to work in a hot, humid, and dusty environment.
* Competency in project management tools and software, such as Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and project scheduling tools.
