    Job Description:

    Laboratory Technical Assistant 1

     

    This position performs the daily tasks necessary for the successful operation of the Vet Med large animal barns. Responsibilities include provision of daily husbandry care; maintaining biological safety within the facility; interacting with investigators; monitoring the animal environment; recording daily animal census and environmental data; interacting with Facility Services personnel regarding facility infrastructure; and interacting with outside providers to maintain the facility and equipment.

     

    75% Daily cleaning of large animal floors, empty outpatient stalls. Stock animal feed areas. Stock shavings carts. Proper disposal of waste and biohazard waste. Responsible for cleanliness of assigned areas. Uses proper agents and dilution mixture to sanitize floors, empty stalls, carts, and areas around animal stalls. Keep feed/storage areas clean and organized.

     

    20% Understands and follows basic animal husbandry requirements mandated by law to maintain health status of laboratory animals. Observes animals and reports abnormalities in appearance and behaviors bases on bodily functions, discharges, etc. Records daily census logs.

     

    5% Other duties as assigned

     

    Laboratory Technical Assistant 2

     

    This position performs the daily tasks necessary for the successful operation of the Vet Med large animal barns. Responsibilities include provision of daily husbandry care; maintaining biological safety within the facility; interacting with investigators; monitoring the animal environment; recording daily animal census and environmental data; interacting with Facility Services personnel regarding facility infrastructure; and interacting with outside providers to maintain the facility and equipment.

     

    40% Daily cleaning of large animal floors, empty outpatient stalls. Stock animal feed areas. Stock shavings carts. Proper disposal of waste and biohazard waste. Responsible for cleanliness of assigned areas. Uses proper agents and dilution mixture to sanitize floors, empty stalls, carts, and areas around animal stalls.     30% Set up stalls, maintain stall cards. Understands basic contamination issues and how to prevent disease through vectors and fomite transmission. Follow standard operation procedures in handling BSL 1 areas. Handles and restrains animals through the use of proper animal handling techniques. Understands and follows standard operating procedures for basic animal husbandry requirements mandated by law. Able to clean stall with animals inside stall. Able to move, halter, relocate animals if needed. Daily operation and maintenance of Large animal equipment (forklift, tractor, floor scrubber). Understands and applies basic sanitation practices mandated by law and dilution requirements. Follow check off list, per diem sheets and stall cards to regulate the feeding and watering of animals according to the appropriate time and measurement requirements. Responsible for certain animals being fed according to a specific diet. Document this information to the animal's record.

     

    20% Understands and follows basic animal husbandry requirements mandated by law to maintain health status of laboratory animals. Observes animals and reports abnormalities in appearance and behaviors bases on bodily functions, discharges, etc. Records daily census logs.

     

    5% Monitors environmental conditions and understands security control measures. Documents temp and humidity conditions. Requires the ability to read a minimum/maximum thermometer and understand the importance of environmental conditions

    Laboratory Technical Assistant 3

     

    This position performs the daily tasks necessary for the successful operation of the Vet Med large animal barns. Responsibilities include provision of daily husbandry care; maintaining biological safety within the facility; interacting with investigators; monitoring the animal environment; recording daily animal census and environmental data; interacting with Facility Services personnel regarding facility infrastructure, and interacting with outside providers to maintain the facility and equipment.

     

    45% Understand and follow basic animal husbandry requirements mandated by law to maintain health status of laboratory animals. Basic technical skills to give medical treatments to animals that include: reading and understanding medical terms, injections of drugs, and simple dilution rates for drugs. Set up areas for sick, injured or incoming animals. Segregates pregnant animals and maintains production records. Moves dead animals to necropsy. Move relocate food/farm animals through use of gate system. Able to halter move/relocate animals, if needed, and tie using safety release knot. This task requires the individual to follow standard operating procedures, write legible and complete math calculations. Observe and document animal abnormalities in appearance based on bodily functions, discharges, etc. Maintains all animal charts, records, and identification cards. This task requires physical dexterity and strengths, and the ability to read and write and take verbal instructions. Handles and restrains animals through the use of proper handling techniques. This task requires good hand eye coordination. Follow standard operating procedures in handling/cleaning Biohazards in BSL1 and above animal areas. Must be able to bend, lift from floor and reach high levels. Complete the cleaning, preparing and sterilizing of surgical instruments. This task will involve writing, reading, physical dexterity and problem solving. Responsible for the cleanliness of assigned areas. Uses proper agents and dilution mixtures to sanitize floors, animal areas, and surrounding areas. All areas must remain clean and sanitized at all times. Incumbent will follow safety standards to ensure proper sanitation procedures. Understand basic contamination issues and how to prevent disease through vectors and fomite transmission.

     

    30% Daily operation and maintenance of large animal equipment (forklift, tractor, floor scrubber). Able to change out propane tanks. Understands and applies basic sanitation practices mandated by law and dilution requirements. Task will involve physical dexterity and strength, reading and writing and problem solving skills.

     

    20% Follow check off list and per diem sheets to regulate the feeding and watering of animals according to the appropriate time and measurement requirements. Responsible for certain animals being fed according to specific diet and documenting this information to the animals record. Monitors and understands the importance of environmental conditions, security standards and security control measures. Documents temperature and humidity conditions of animal areas by understanding and reading a minimum/maximum thermometer.

     

    5% Perform other related duties assigned depending upon experience and proficiency levels attained. Must preform task as assigned in a timely, courteous and professional manner. Such task will be accompanied by the proper training so as not to cause harm or injury to the animal care person or the animals. Assist the Laboratory Technician Supervisor in carrying out standard operating procedures for all research and client animals. This task requires good organizational skills, the ability to read and write and understand verbal instructions.

    Every six semester hours earned from an accredited college or university in any of the biological, physical, chemical, or agricultural sciences will substitute for one year of the required experience.
