A large bank/financial company in the Cincinnati, OH area is seeking a Senior Postgres Database Engineer to lead efforts around scaling and optimizing a high-transaction Ruby-based application. This is a long-term contract opportunity, with potential for extensions. The position is remote, but must work EST hours and be open to occasional onsite travel to the Cincinnati area.

This individual will join an Agile squad supporting a Ruby on Rails monolithic application running inside AWS Postgres containers. The team is currently hitting the ceiling of their database engineering expertise and needs a Postgres SME to lead the next phase of architectural evolution.

Responsibilities:

• Lead efforts to partition and scale a monolithic Postgres database with 10M+ rows, moving toward single tenancy or sharding.

• Drive performance tuning, data archiving strategies, and best practices for high-availability, high-transaction environments.

• Collaborate with Ruby developers using Active Record ORM to ensure seamless integration between application and database layers.

• Architect and deploy robust, scalable Postgres solutions capable of handling 50–100 transactions per second.

• Provide guidance on database design, data lifecycle management, and deployment strategies in AWS.

Skills and Requirements

- 7+ years of experience in database engineering with proven expertise:

o Independently leading initiatives

o designing and deploying high-availability, high-transaction databases at scale.

- Postgres expert

o Lead large scale projects using Postgres

- Ruby on Rails

- Active Record ORM

- Aurora RDS in AWS

o Experience deploying multi-region -- running “hot hot “or “hot cold”

o Familiarity with containerized environments and cloud infrastructure (AWS) - Financial industry experience

- Terraform

- Java

- APM tools
