    Job Description:

    Under general supervision, investigates alleged or suspected violations of Federal, state, or local laws, rules, and regulations to determine if the evidence is sufficient to recommend prosecution or to report findings to the appropriate jurisdiction authority for their action. The investigator will be required to travel to different locations within an assigned area, but could be called to travel outside of the area. The investigator will be required to respond to State of Emergency requests and other duties as requested.

    Job Responsibilities & Performance Standards:

    1. Collaborate with other authorities on activities such as surveillance, transcription, and research.

    2. Develop investigative leads through a complete review of case files.

    3. Develop comprehensive investigative plans for each investigation.

    4. Interview parents, guardians, or court service workers within the specified time limits of referral.

    5. Visit various locations to gather information on youth efficiently.

    6. Coordinates with local law enforcement agencies to facilitate the progress of investigations.

    7. Keep the supervisor informed of investigation progress and advises of significant developments as required.

    8. Records all significant investigative activity in case files in a clear, concise, and timely manner.

    9. Review case files for all necessary and appropriate documentation and ensure compliance with established guidelines.

    10. Maintains case files according to established guidelines.

    11. Conducts administrative and criminal investigations.

    12. Obtains arrest warrants from appropriate courts for youth and/or adults.

    13. Testifies in a court of law for all proceedings related to investigations.

    14. Examine records to locate links in the chain of evidence or information.

    15. Prepare reports and other correspondence within specified time limits.

    16. Draft reports and other correspondence using the proper format, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

    17. Research and include all supporting documentation for reports before submission.

    18. Make proper distribution of all correspondence according to established guidelines.

    19. Identifies case issues and evidence needed, based on analysis of charges, complaints, or allegations of law violations.

    20. Obtains and verifies evidence by interviewing and observing suspects and witnesses, or by analyzing records.

    21. Performs criminal background checks according to established guidelines.

    22. Obtains information related to cases.

    1. Processes crime scene evidence according to established guidelines.

    2. Conduct interviews with the principal parties of internal investigations by using appropriate interrogation and investigative techniques.

    3. Coordinates polygraph/CVSA examinations as required.

    4. Prepares or assists with the preparation of investigative reports, as required.

    23. State Vehicle Operation and Care

    1. Schedule the vehicle for preventative maintenance when due according to established guidelines.

    2. Performs operator maintenance according to the manufacturer's specifications and established guidelines.

    3. Always maintains personal equipment in a serviceable condition and reports and/or replaces missing items according to established guidelines.

    24. May respond to emergencies, operating emergency equipment, in a lawful manner, showing due regard to the safety of other motorists.

    1. Operates state vehicles in a safe, lawful manner always.

    25. On-Call Status

    1. Investigators will follow regional leadership “On-Call” schedules unless on approved PTO/Vacation/Training.

    2. Investigators always carry their state-issued cell phone to be contacted by DJJ supervisors or other related personnel unless on approved PTO/Vacation.

    3. Investigators will ensure state-assigned vehicles always remain in ‘Ready’ status.

    Sample Technical Competencies:

    • Ability to exercise sound judgment and decision-making.

    • Ability to use proper and effective interview and interrogation techniques.

    • Knowledge of law enforcement databases and other available sources of information.

    • Knowledge of legal procedures and processes.

    • Knowledge of case management tools, techniques, technology, and software

    • Ability to conduct surveillance, use covert devices, and interview informants.

    Entry Qualifications:

    + Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited college or university, Georgia P.O.S.T certification, and one (1) year of related experience; or Georgia P.O.S.T certification and three (3) years of experience in law enforcement or related field; or Georgia P.O.S.T certification and one (1) year of experience required at the lower level Criminal Investigator 1 (PSP090) or position equivalent. Note: Some positions may require the incumbent to have a valid Class C driver’s license.

    + This position is being filled in the North Region Unit.

    + The position requires a Georgia POST certification in Basic Law Enforcement. This position is authorized by Georgia Law [OCGA 35-8-2(8) and 40- 4A-8] and by the Commissioner of Juvenile Justice to be designated as a Peace Officer while in the course of his/her employment duties with the Department of Juvenile Justice to exercise the power of arrest and to carry weapons to include firearms. This position is required to abide by all Georgia POST requirements with training, including the use of deadly force and firearms qualification. This position is full-time.

    1. Enforces the State of Georgia Criminal statutes and DJJ policy regarding youth supervised by DJJ, staff employed by DJJ, and vendors contracted with DJJ.

    2. Prepares and executes criminal arrest/search warrants.

    3. Must be in good standing with the POST PBLE certification.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Four or more years (total) of full-time or equivalent part-time experience in police or investigative work in a federal, state, or local law enforcement agency; or a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, police science, or a closely related field.

    + Experience working in an investigative unit, working on various alleged or suspected incidents.

    + Resides North of the I-20 Corridor or within 50 miles of the Marietta Regional Youth Detention Center.

    + Candidate MUST HAVE current and valid certification as a Basic Law Enforcement Peace Officer by the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) Council.
