Health Unit Coordinator

As a vital member of the Center for Perioperative Care, you'll play an essential role in creating a welcoming, organized, and efficient environment for patients, families, and staff. You'll be the communication hub of the department-coordinating patient flow, supporting the surgical team, and ensuring every detail is handled with care and precision.
This position will work Monday through Friday, 7:30AM-4:00PM, no weekend, no nights, no call, and no holidays.
What You'll Do:
+ Greet and assist patients, family members, visitors, and staff, providing a calm and professional presence during a critical time in the surgical process.
+ Maintain and update patient flow processes to ensure timely coordination of preoperative and postoperative procedures.
+ Manage all departmental communications, including answering phones, paging, faxing, and distributing patient and unit correspondence.
+ Support the surgical team by accurately entering physician orders, updating patient records, and maintaining documentation according to hospital standards.
+ Monitor and maintain par levels for supplies, forms, and downtime materials; ensure family lounge and waiting areas are clean, stocked, and welcoming.
+ Coordinate logistics such as scheduling patient transports, completing errands, and maintaining logs and reports.
+ Ensure all office and unit equipment (computers, printers, fax machines, etc.) are in working order and follow up on any repair requests as needed.
+ Adhere strictly to hospital policies, including HIPAA, safety, and infection control standards.
+ Participate in audits, charge reconciliation, and departmental quality improvement initiatives.
+ Contribute to a supportive team environment by assisting colleagues, mentoring new staff, and seeking opportunities for learning and growth.

+ Prior experience in healthcare administration or a clinical support role preferred.

+ High school diploma or equivalent experience.
+ Knowledge of medical terminology and computer applications.
+ Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
+ Completion of a Certified Health Unit Secretary course preferred.
+ In the course of duties may be asked to distribute medications to the nurse at the bedside.
+ Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
