Description
The Assistant Mechanical Engineer is responsible for substation engineering and consulting services for clients across the US and internationally. Projects range in size, complexity, and voltage class from small distribution facility upgrades to large transmission projects. This position can influence the future of the resiliency, reliability, and economic operation of the electric grid.
Principal responsibilities include the design of high voltage (13kV-500kV) electrical substations. Areas of design and responsibilities include:
+ Electrical design of projects from the conceptual phase through design completion.
+ Physical substation design including yard layouts, plans, sections and details, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, interior and exterior raceways, auxiliary AC/DC power systems, and associated bills of material.
+ Protection and control design including panel arrangements, one line/single line diagrams, three line diagrams, AC and DC schematics , equipment wiring, and relay panel wiring.
+ Preparing calculations and reports for engineering studies (grounding, lightning protection, AC/DC load studies, etc.)
+ Preparing equipment specifications for procurement and/or factory acceptance testing
+ Coordinating design activities with other departments (Civil/Structural, Networks, Transmission Line, others.)
+ Assisting with research and compiling project related data.
+ Assisting with correcting and updating drawings provided by senior engineers to verify corrections are made within multiple CAD related software.
+ Assisting in performing field inspections, measurements or calculations.
+ Performing other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
+ Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related degree from an ABET accredited program required or;
+ Bachelor Degree in Mechanical or related Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program and successful completion of Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
+ Prior internship and/or related consulting experience preferred.
+ Basic knowledge in standard mechanical engineering techniques, principles and procedures.
+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
+ Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
+ Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite)
+ Basic computer skills include AutoCAD, BIM (Revit), and 3D Rendering Programs.
+ Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem solving skills.
+ Demonstrated leadership skills.
+ Engineers in Training-EIT Certification preferred.
+ Minimum of a 3.0 GPA strongly preferred.
+ Involvement on campus or in the community preferred.
+ Candidates must be legally authorized to work permanently (i.e., without time limitations, without restrictions or without need for work sponsorship) in the country where this position is located.
