Position Information:
The Systems Engineer I supports the AgriLife Research Center for Managed Technology Services (ARCMTS) by designing, deploying, and managing Linux-based server environments, virtual infrastructure, and core research systems. This position is part of a dedicated systems engineering vertical and contributes to secure, stable, and scalable infrastructure across institutional research environments. In addition to technical responsibilities, the role involves providing systems-related recommendations to researchers and collaborators, helping them adopt solutions that meet their operational needs, funding requirements, and institutional policies. This position operates in parallel with the existing IT, research, and administrative structures at participating institutions. It is designed to complement and support institutional practices, not to replace or override them. The position works collaboratively within ARCMTS and with partner institutions to deliver services that align with existing policies, procedures, and organizational processes, ensuring consistency, respect for institutional governance, and seamless integration.
Key Responsibilities:
+ Deploy and manage Linux-based servers and core infrastructure (VMware, Azure, etc.).
+ Assist researchers and operational teams with architecture planning, server configuration, and platform selection.
+ Onboard new research units into ARCMTS-supported systems, standardizing provisioning, documentation, and support.
+ Monitor system performance and respond to service interruptions or bottlenecks.
+ Recommend infrastructure strategies based on project workload, compliance needs, and data lifecycle expectations.
+ Support upgrades, migrations, patching, and automation improvements.
+ Contribute to systems documentation, procedures, and knowledge base.
+ Collaborate across ARCMTS verticals and with external vendors as needed.
+ Collaborate with local IT teams and institutional stakeholders to ensure systems designs, configurations, and changes are consistent with the policies and procedures of the host institution.
+ Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience:
+ Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
+ Two years of experience supporting Linux servers in a professional environment.
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
+ Familiarity with virtualization platforms (VMware preferred), storage concepts, and core networking principles.
+ Ability to document system configurations, processes, and procedures.
+ Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
+ Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Experience supporting research environments, HPC clusters, or mixed OS ecosystems.
+ Exposure to cloud platforms (Azure preferred), infrastructure-as-code tools, and automation frameworks.
+ Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git) and scripting (e.g., Bash, Python).
+ Preferred certifications: CompTIA Linux+, Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA), Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate, or VMware Certified Professional (VCP).
What You Need to Know
Salary: Pay Grade 72. Compensation for this position is commensurate based on the selected candidate’s qualifications.
Note: Full-time remote work is not available for this position. However, partially remote work may be available, pending employee eligibility requirements are met in accordance with AgriLife Alternate Work Location Procedures.
