    Description of Work Unit

    The Office of Engagement and Extension ( OEE ) was organized in 2006 to advance CSU’s engagement and outreach missions. OEE includes CSU Extension, Learning Innovation (including CSU Online), the Colorado Water Center, and a variety of vibrant programs that engage the teaching, research, extension, and service missions of Colorado State University. The Vice President for Engagement and Extension ( VPEE ) is the principal administrative, academic, and fiscal officer for the division, reports to the CSU President, and works closely with the Provost/Executive Vice President. OEE works collaboratively across all Colleges and offices on campus and has strong engagement programs throughout Colorado, the Western US, and globally. At any given time, OEE includes over 400 employees. The total budget is approximately $95 million. OEE is one of the most institutionally comprehensive commitments to engagement and outreach among all land-grant and other universities. Propelled by OEE’s leadership, nationally CSU is a Carnegie Engaged University (2008, 2014), is a member of the Engagement Scholarship Consortium, is an APLU Innovation and Economic Prosperity University (2016, 2024) and is highly ranked for its online degree programs. Annually, Learning Innovation garners enrollments of over 15,000 learners and CSU Extension delivers approximately 500,000 educational contacts.

     

    The Tri River Area ( TRA ) is a four-county partnership including Mesa, Delta, Montrose, and Ouray counties. Mesa County has a population of approximately 157,000, and the county office is located in Grand Junction. The area population is growing as people relocate for employment, retirement, and the desirability of the area as a place to live. Natural wonders provide abundant year-round recreational activities including camping, skiing, hiking, hunting, and fishing.     Position Summary

    The Ute Learning Garden, Associate Program Coordinator, will support the CSU Extension Tri River Area Horticulture staff in two realms, the management of the Clifford Duncan Memorial Garden, and the development of a strategic plan for a tribal nursery.The Clifford Duncan Memorial Garden is a native plant garden in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management, the US Forest Service, and the Ute Indian Tribe of the Uintah & Ouray Reservation. It contains plants native to the Grand Valley and structures important to Ute people. It serves as a learning garden and CSU Extension hosts hundreds of visitors each year on guided tours, hosted by trained docents. Visitors include students of all ages, adult learners, and others. The garden is located behind the Mesa County Extension office at 2775 US 50, Grand Junction, CO, 81503.

     

    The Ute Learning Garden, Associate Program Coordinator will work with County Extension staff, the BLM and Ute Indian tribal members to maintain and improve the garden, support programming, and develop a strategic plan for a tribal nursery. Job duties will include caring for the garden, improving garden signage and interpretation, and the development of a strategic plan for a tribal nursery. As well as other duties as necessary.

     

    Funding for this position is made possible by continued support from the BLM as well funding from an America’s Public Lands Planning Grant. Funding for this project expires in May 2026.

     

    This is a fully in-office/in-person position that will work in the Mesa County Extension Office in Grand Junction, Colorado.

    Position Minimum Qualifications

    + Ability to identify native plants and fauna found in the garden.

    + Exhibits organizational skills and ability to prioritize.

    + Strong verbal and written communication skills.

    + Demonstrated land report writing.

    + Demonstrated working knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications.

    + Ability to operate hand and mechanical garden tools and machinery.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Completed master’s degree in Ecology, Natural Resources of closely related field.

    + Landscape maintenance experience such as irrigation repair, weed control, planting, and pruning.

    + One year of experience in grant or report writing.

    + One year of experience identifying and working with Colorado native plants.
