Service Technician - Level 1 is an entry-level position. Most new hires for this position have little or no utility experience. The first year is mostly training with our in-house technical trainers and experienced coworkers. It generally takes one year of training before a new employee is qualified to work alone or to be scheduled to work the Sunday or night rotation.
General Purpose of Work:
Under direct supervision and at the direction of Meter and Connection supervision or the Distribution Operator on duty, investigates, makes safe, or makes repairs to the gas and electric distribution system as detailed in General Duties. Provides support and emergency response for Gas and Electric Operations activities.
General Duties:
+ Investigates reports of gas odor and possible carbon monoxide.
+ Repairs above-grade gas leaks on Company and customer equipment and piping.
+ Installs, exchanges, locks, unlocks, and removes all types of rigid-hung gas meters and single-phase electric meters.
+ Assists with the installation of large-volume meters and specified regulation.
+ Tests, replaces, and maintains gas service regulators and reliefs.
+ Performs leak surveys.
+ Installs and removes gas pipe and fittings on customer-owned piping systems.
+ Stores and maintains meters, tools, and repair parts on a Company vehicle.
+ Properly completes written records in a neat and thorough manner.
+ Utilizes tools such as gas leak and carbon monoxide detection instruments, voltmeters, gas pressure gauges, pipe cutters, stocks and dies, power vises, and various manual and electric hand tools.
+ Performs meter inventory and pipe inventory as requested.
+ Performs other incidental and related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
+ High school diploma or equivalent with demonstrated mechanical and electrical aptitude.
+ Must have and keep a valid Wisconsin driver's license.
+ Must be neat in appearance and have a customer-friendly demeanor.
+ Must have the manual dexterity to perform this type of work.
+ Must have a basic understanding of the mechanical and electrical principles and safe installation and operation of residential, commercial, and industrial gas and electric equipment.
+ Must be able to detect the presence of odorant readily at 0.5 percent gas using an odorometer.
+ Must be able to occasionally lift 70 pounds to chest height and be able to routinely lift 50 pounds.
+ Must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, on uneven surface or ground, and indoors in poor lighting conditions.
+ Must be able to make multiple trips up and down stairs or ladders in performance of job duties.
+ Must be reasonably available for overtime and emergency work assignments.
Knowledge and Skills to Be Acquired.
+ Must have or acquire the operator qualifications necessary to perform the covered tasks for this position.
+ Must develop and demonstrate excellent mechanical ability and the ability to work alone or with others.
+ Must have or acquire a thorough knowledge of Department of Transportation Pipeline Safety Code requirements, Wisconsin Administrative Code (Public Service Commission of Wisconsin), National Fuel Gas Code (NFPA 54), and Company Construction Standards and ensure compliance with each.
+ Must demonstrate the ability to plan and organize work on a daily basis.
+ Must be competent in the use of the GTX Mapping system and other personal computer applications used by Service and Metering employees.
+ This position is subject to drug testing in accordance with Federal Department of Transportation regulations.
