    Job Description

    Chemist – Surface Area

     

    The Chemist leads, develops and mentors a laboratory team of 5+ Lab Technicians working to ensure delivery against metrics and providing validation reports for new instruments.

     

    They conduct theoretical and experimental scientific and technological investigations to identify customer needs, develop new methodologies, next generation products and formulations. They collaborate on testing programs and scale up in the lab. The Chemist adheres to quality regulations and customer audits.

     

    The Chemist is results-focused with strong project management skills.

     

    This role is on-site in Curtis Bay, Baltimore, MD, is on call every 6 weeks, and reports to the Lab Manager.

    Responsibilities

    + Supervise and develop a team of 5-10 technicians with safety as a top priority while maintaining a clean and orderly lab environment

    + Demonstrate a culture of operational excellence and continuous improvement

    + Perform chemical analyses and scientific tests using routine and special techniques

    + Comply with all Critical Life Safety Policies, Environmental, Health and Safety training, policies and procedures.

    + Collect, analyze and process laboratory samples.

    + Record results of tests, organize data, perform basic advanced computations

    + Install, operate, maintain and repair laboratory test equipment, apparatus, systems and supplies.

    + Provide technical support to customers as applicable by lab area.

    + Ensure analytical data and services meet internal and external customer needs and expectations, including customer visits and audits.

    Required Qualifications

    + Bachelor’s in Chemistry or related scientific field

    + 3+ years related technical experience

    + Ability to work across different shifts to provide supervision

    + Experience in a laboratory environment

    + Demonstrated experience with computer programs such as Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Minitab.

    + Intermediate skills in analytical, scientific method or operational process

    + Education or experience in advanced chemistry, math and computers.

     

    Physical Requirements and Environment

     

    + Must be able to stand, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb stairs and ladders over 100 ft.

    + Must be willing to wear PPE (Personal Protective equipment) including but not limited to hard hat, protective eyewear, steel-toed boots, hearing protection, Level A suit, full face respirator.

    + Ability to work in a high hazard environment, including adverse weather conditions, elevated spaces, confined spaces, extreme temperatures, and noisy surroundings.

    + Ability to follow safety protocols and standards working in a pilot plant facility with highly hazardous materials

    + Ability to follow safety protocols and standards working in a laboratory environment with highly hazardous materials

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Master’s in Chemistry or related field

    + Experience supervising technical professionals

    + Education or experience in a production manufacturing environment.

    + Experience managing competing demands and adjusting priorities
